3 Types of Projection Neurotic projection is the most common variety of projection and most clearly meets the definition of defense mechanism. In this type of projection, people may attribute feelings, motives, or attitudes they find unacceptable in themselves to someone else. Complementary projection occurs when individuals assume others feel the same way they do. For example, a person with a particular political persuasion might take it for granted that friends and family members share those beliefs. Complimentary projection is the assumption other people can do the same things as well as oneself. For example, an accomplished pianist might take it for granted that other piano students can play the piano equally well. Psychological Projection Psychological projection is a defense mechanism people subconsciously employ in order to cope with difficult feelings or emotions. Psychological projection involves projecting undesirable feelings or emotions onto someone else, rather than admitting to or dealing with the unwanted feelings. Have you ever disliked someone only to become convinced that the person had a vendetta against you? This is a common example of psychological projection. Luckily, there are methods you can use to identify why you are projecting your emotions and put a stop to this coping mechanism. The Basics of Psychological Projection The theory of psychological projection was developed by Sigmund Freud, an Austrian psychologist commonly referred to as the "father of psychoanalysis." For this reason, psychological projection is sometimes called "Freudian projection." During his sessions with patients, Freud noticed that they would sometimes accuse others of having the same feelings they themselves were demonstrating. By engaging in this behavior, the patient was better able to deal with the emotions he or she was experiencing. The classic example of Freudian projection is that of a woman who has been unfaithful to her husband but who accuses her husband … Developing emotional intelligence implies developing a cluster of innate qualities that help us in enhancing our mental well-being on a day-to-day basis. 5 Ways To Develop Emotional Intelligence 1. Take a look at the following tell-tale signs of gaslighting behavior Examples of Gaslighting 1. Blatant lying First, people who gaslight tell obvious lies. You know that they are lying. The issue is how they are lying with such ease. The gaslighter is setting up an abusive pattern. You begin to question everything and become uncertain of the simplest matters. This self-doubt is exactly what the gaslighter wants. 2. Deny, Deny, Deny Again, you know they said what they said. However, they completely deny ever saying it. The gaslighter may push the point and ask you to 'prove it,' knowing that you only have your memory of the conversation that they are denying happened. It starts to make you question your memory and your reality. You begin to wonder if the gaslighter is right, maybe they didn't really ever say what you remember. Consequently, more and more often, you question your reality and accept theirs. 3. Using what you love against you Additionally, people who gaslight use what is closest to you against you. If you love your job, they will find issues with it. If you have children, the gaslighter may force you to believe you should never have had them. This abusive manipulation tactic causes the victim to question the foundation of themselves as well as what they hold close. 4. The slow death of self One of the terrifying parts of gaslighting is the methodical timeline that the abuser uses. The manipulation happens gradually and over time the victim morphs into someone entirely different. The most confident human being can become a shell of a person without being aware of it in the process. The victim's individual reality diminishes and becomes that of the abuser. 5. Words vs. Actions Notably, a person who gaslights talks and talks. However, their words mean nothing. Therefore, it is important to look at what they are doing. Glittering generalities This technique takes "big virtue" words to which many people are emotionally connected and attaches them to the ends favored by the propagandist. Make America Great. Hope and Change. However, these kinds of words mean different things to different people and can be used in different ways. "When someone talks to us about democracy, we immediately think of our own definite ideas about democracy, the ideas we learned at home, at school, and in church. Our first and natural reaction is to assume that the speaker is using the word in our sense, that he believes as we do on this important subject. This lowers our 'sales resistance' and makes us far less suspicious than we ought to be when the speaker begins telling us the things 'the United States must do to preserve democracy."" Testimonials This technique is used frequently in marketing and advertising. Propagandists will use testimonials to legitimize an idea or position. This technique makes use of the fact that we more easily attach to specific personal narratives than to general facts and dry statistics. The personal narrative, after all, is the format by which we experience ourselves. "Anne Frank" is more accessible and comprehensible than "six million" and thus carries more emotion…

This was a teenager that got scooped up months ago and they didn't even say why. I wasn't the only one to point out how rampant sexual harassment and bullying is, how it could have been even a fight that blew out of proportion.
