December 30 marks Rizal Day in the Philippines. José Rizal is considered a national hero of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer & a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. #dolls #dollsky
Maria Clara Barbie, circa 2000 (Mackie face sculpt) and Philippine Islands Ken, circa 1999 (possibly 1990 Alan / Ken molded hair face sculpt) by Richwell Trading Ltd, Philippines. These particular dolls were exclusive to the Filipino market. This particular Ken and Barbie are wearing a barong Tagalog and a Maria Clara dress, both are national dress in the Philippines, which would be worn for formal occasions. Ken wear a white barong Tagalog (the sheer shirt), a white shirt underneath and off white pants. His shoes are in a plastic pocket. The barong Tagalog (commonly known as a "barong" or "baro" meaning "shirt" in Tagalog) is long sleeved embroidered formal shirt which combines native Filipino and colonial Spanish clothing styles. Traditionally, the barong Tagalog is made with sheer textiles such as piña (made from pineapple leaves) or abacá (Manila hemp); although in modern times, cheaper materials like organza silk, ramie or polyester are also used. Barbie wears a brown and white Maria Clara gown and a brown parasol sits behind her. The back of the Philippine Islands Ken box and the Maria Clara Barbie box. The back of the Maria Clara Barbie shows the other dolls in the line, wearing various Filipiniana (Filipino cultural clothing) dresses. The back of the Philippine Islands Ken shows a salakot (traditional Filipino conical hat), bamboo cane and a barong Tagalog. There is some information about the Barong Tagalog (But honestly, Wikipedia gives you more accurate information about the barong Tagalog than what's written on the back of this box). Barbie Looks 17 (Brandon face sculpt) and Fashionista 199 (Taya face sculpt) rebodied Yoga Green Top are posed together. Brandon wears a barong Tagalog and pants purchased from eBay while Taya wears a terno purchased from eBay. As you can see here, this barong Tagalog is not made from sheer fabric and a lot of barong Tagalogs these days aren't necessarily sheer. The terno is unified gown version of the "Maria Clara" dress with butterfly sleeves popularized in the first half of the 20th century by Philippine National Artist Ramon Valera. The terno is commonly worn these days (the Maria Clara dress is worn less enough these days) for formal and semi formal occasions.
