a wolf the size of a pine that you can hear shuffling through the hills, trees bending around it, it bending around trees. the sound seems distant, creaking and keening from another world. you don't notice the sound has left until it's too latem deafening, wrong, silence of the sort that sets your hackles up. you turn and a black void surrounds your vision. you cock your head up and it moves to blotch out the stars. its fangs and eyeshine pierce the ink

a deep growl comes from everywhere and resonates in your lungs. you can't breathe. you let out a cry of desperation, immediately silenced by a swipe of silhouetted wind, throwing you to the ground and pressing you down. you feel severely out of your place. should have kept to the path. should have kept to the path.

muzzle pressed into pinestraw and detritus. slid effortlessly up a pine, frictionless, until you are eye to orb with its glowing amber. its paws are on the earth, yet you feel claws tighten on either side of your body, nailing you to the tree. you can't yell, even if you had the air the will escapes

it lopes to you, its limbs swaying like trunks but making no noise. it grabs your muzzle in its, holding you with just enough pressure not to crush. like it's done this before. your mindless keening silenced by a quaking drone, a foghorn that shakes your eyes in orbit. the night brightens, the warning a gift.

the taste of cold morning fog floods your maw, creeping through the plains of your mind, drowning out your senses and ensnaring you from the inside. it drops you from the tree and tethers you to the canid suspending you in air. it demands your vision, it enraptures your body, your spirit, your force. you feel the fog boiling up to the surface, the strain and agony

spilling out through your pores in a rolling, thin haze that singes, a burning sensation followed by the cool haze of the mist. newblood smoked fur prickling out of your loosening shape. you battle to keep yourself, a desperate, cried, fill…

There are many ways one’s identity may manifest- here’s a few!

Contherian- an individual who does not experience mental shifts, who is fixed at a constant point between human and non-

Vacillant therian- A level of integration between both sides that transitions more gradually, so that one side may act as they need. Some stimuli may trigger more rapid shifts. (This is similar to as suntherian (soon-there-ian))

Cladotherian- An individual that feel as a clade or other group of animals rather than a single species (ie. I am kin of all wolf subspecies, I identify as all canids, etc)

Polytherian/kin- An individual who has more than one theriotype or kintype.

These terms are initially defined on page 2 and 3.

Physical nonhumanity is a phenomenon that comes from several sources, just as nonhumanity itself. This can be the result of life-long animality, upbringing, integral truth, delusion, and a range of other causes. These critters are still walking among you and me (and typing this zine), and lead lives similar to yours. Being this way is reflecting that you are fully, completely nonhuman, be that integrally or outwardly. Some may seek permanent body modification to reflect this fact, or not be able to lead regular human lives due to being an animal that’s upright.

A holothere is an individual that considers itself fully nonhuman in every way. This term can be used as an individual sees fit, but from observation of the critters in my life, those who are comfortable with the term tend to have existences that are fully encompassed by being an animal- there is no part of their self that is not influenced by being an animal in some way, it is, at a base level, what they are.

A biological nonhuman is an individual that is wholly or partially biologically an “animal”. Individuals might use this term to denote that they feel that they are a genetic descendant of a nonhuman species, that they have nonhuman DNA in their bloodline, or that their inherent physical traits…

although at one point i had forgotten about it, this curse had been with me since birth
in childhood, feeling pointed ears pinned back against my head in anger, a tail wagging in joy
things that physically didn't exist, but felt just as real to me as anything else had.

i had taken control of my body once before, but this would be more complicated

Ever since i was a child i remember running on paw. By now, i've forgotten most of my youth, only littered memories once every few months, scattered about my mind like half-dead stars. but of the few that still shine, i remember running on paws. when i was young, i would play with a friend on the elementary school playground,. we'd be cheetahs and we'd drop down to all fours and see who could run the fastest from one end of a track to the other on our paws

it's been a long time since then- since that playground and a world where running on paws was met with little more than a giggle. I don't remember my cheetah friend anymore, but i know we grew distant as we aged - he didn't keep his paws. but i have. i never really lost them. as the years went on i've used them more and more: i land on them when i go up the stairs, i push them onto the counters when my human friends are around, i shake them when they pet me.
im a wolf these days though. more of a wolf now that i was a cheetah the. it's scary for animals like us in their world. most of our friends who played pretend are gone now- eaten by that endless grey hunger that consumes our forests, consumes our people, consumes our lives. the few of us are left out there, but we're few and far between. every day i use my paws more. the noises i make in response have become less like english words and fallen more towards whines, grunts, and howls. every day i rely more on my collar. i rely on my owner. i rely on those few animals i know- however hard it may be. i worry, for when i make it to the end of the track. when i run to the other side of the playground, the wind blowing across my fur, my ears tucking back, and i sit back on my haunches, proud of the distance i've crossed. i know i wont be the same as i was at the start, no longer a human aching my spine into foreign contortions. but when this gets lonely, will i ever be able to retur…

What is Nonhumanity?

The word "Nonhuman" denotes an individual who identifies as something other than human on an integral level. As an experience, nonhumanity is generally a large facet of an individual's life, and can affect their sense of self, their lens on the world, and the way they behave. This way of being can be brought about by many different avenues, be they spiritual, psychological, physiological, etc. It is a product of self-actualization, upbringing, lived experiences, queerness, neurodivergence, but differs per individual. There is no one way to identify as nonhuman, and some that fit under this label may not choose to use it at all. All of us know that some part, or whole, of ourselves does not align.

"Nonhumans" can be used as a term to collectively refer to those that consider themselves under it, such as therians, otherkin, some fictionkin, dogheads, elves, weres, and etc. Anyone to whom the definition applies can choose to use the term.

Project N.U.Z. is a collective of critters that have been lingering along the woodline a while- we know a thing or two about the bright gleam a newblood gets in the back of their eye when they realize there's words for the fire that has been stirring inside. We hope that what we bring to you stokes that fire, and helps more critters see that fire within you. Keep in mind that while there is a large selection of voices represented here, we do not claim to be the voice of the community as a whole!

Your scribe, clawscrawler, jester, etc is me, Laika, aka Synanthrope. I have known of the fire stoked in me for about 10 years now, and it took some time to find what its name was. I have tried my best to be howling those names for those that need to hear them for about half of that time. I organize events, make music, and a lot more in the name of helping others make sense of their half of this experience. I am very thankful to have such a station, and to be trusted here.

Nonhuman vocab

Therian- An individual with an animalistic sense of self concept, an integral identification as an animal, or animal-like being. Coined in '04ish.

Otherkin- An individual that is integrally something other than human. Can be used as an umbrella term. Coined in '93ish.

Fictionkin- An individual that is integrally a fictional character or a member of a fictional species. Can include human-identifying characters.

Fictotherian- Similar to fictionkin, specifically denotes an integral identification as an animalistic character or species. Can apply to Pokemon, etc!

Theriomythic- denotes an individual who straddles otherkin and therian taxonomy, such as dragons and werewolves, as well as anyone who chooses to use the term.

Nonhuman- An individual that is integrally something other than human to some degree. This can include a range of experiences.

Holothere- An individual that is physically, fundamentally nonhuman in every way. Coined in '24.

Physical Nonhuman/Therian- An individual that is wholly or in part physically nonhuman.

Biological Nonhuman- An individual that is biologically, and/or physiologically nonhuman.

Endel- An individual whose experience of nonhumanity is rooted in, caused by, or greatly influenced by [a] delusion. Coined in ‘21.

Therianthropy- The experience or concept of being therian.

Nonhumanity- The collective of all nonhumans; the experience of being nonhuman.

Kintype- The nonhuman being that an individual is. Otherkin-origin word.

Theriotype- The animalistic nonhuman being that an individual is. Therian-origin word.

Alterhuman- An individual that experiences an altered state of humanity, be it due to plurality, nonhumanity, or otherwise. Larger umbrella term than nonhuman.

Shifting- an altered state of headspace, body, sense, mind, or other perception of being.

Some nonhumans might experience what are known as "Shifts" - temporary changes in mindset, perception, or behavior that align with that of their kintype. These can range in intensity and persistence. Some critters may not experience shifts at all, and some critters may be constantly shifted.

There are a fair number of shifts, but here are a few commonly experienced ones.

Phantom Shift- The proprioceptive presence of parts of the body of your kintype, a similar phenomenon to phantom limbs. For example, a canine therian may experience feeling its tail, paws, or ears. These range in intensity, from feeling the general weight of a tail to being able to feel it getting closed in a car door. These are persistent for some critters, but can also be triggered, ie a canine therian that gets hackles and flattened ears when aggravated.

Mental Shift- A change in mindset that aligns closer with that of a critter's kintype. This state varies per individual, but is generally characterized by animalistic or otherwise intuitive behavior. This is generally a lower, primal, more integral state of being that can be more comfortable for a critter. One may become nonverbal or use animalistic vocalizations.

Sensory Shift- Perceived heightening of senses, or sensory experiences that align with that of one's kintype. This can include heightened sense of smell, hearing ability, and also technically includes phantom shifts.

Physical Shift- 1. the complete physical change of one’s body into that of their kintype, generally regarded as impossible (if u know how lmkkkkk)
2. A perceived physical change in one’s body, such as fangs growing, bones shifting, claws and fur breaking through, etc.

Shifting in general is kind of a miasma to figure out- You may have been experiencing these your entire life and just found words for them, or you might be clawing to even try to feel these in the first place. It takes some time to figure out! Generally the key is getting your brain used to feeling th…

Maybe you feel that the breeze of this knowledge has brought new phlogiston to embers you didn't know were still alight. Maybe the wind is helping you keep the raging wildfire inside the ring. Nonhuman identity is largely a product of self-actualization, which is inherently an ongoing process, just as your Self is constantly shifting. Finding your shape in this field may take time, you may feel like pelts and species flow like seasons, or you might have had your species scrimshawed on you before your first breath. The journey of "figuring out" is very individual, and you will gain insight by asking penetrating questions to critters who have been trudging through this a while. You might also take time to reflect and note different points in your past that you think could have built up to the shape you take now. This process takes time, and the more you dive in and the more you hear, the more you come to understand yourself. Getting your brain a little more plastic and letting yourself feel instincts and urges you may otherwise be holding back to remain upright may help glean a new light on what makes you as a whole. Trying to get as close as possible to what feels right can lead you right up to the veil, and through it if you shimmy just right. You may feel a sense of impostor syndrome hearing those who have a lot of time on their paws detailing their experiences, but trust that the only thing between you and yourself is time.

Species Dysphoria- a type of dysphoria arising from the disparity between one's inwardly perceived self and their outwardly perceived self

A majority of nonhumans experience this to some degree. Species dysphoria can range from a general feeling of discomfort with your body to severe unalignment with your form as a whole. A lot of critters find this difficult to adapt to and work around, and generally it is a good idea to try to be around those that make you feel like the animal you are whenever you swing low like this.
