Oh, I treat it a bit like dominos - set up the pieces and then let 'em fall. I try to make the world and its inhabitants feel as alive as possible, that way each time one of those 'pieces' falls it has meaning.

Sarah's 'human side' was far more emotionally taxing to write than her 'dark side'. I wanted the love for her family to feel authentic and in her last moments I really try to hit the desperation of a mother fighting for her family.

The dark side was cathartic after that.

Well, I don't want to spoil anything (the book is available now ;) ), but Scratch definitely shows back up beyond the initial deal. Now, that said, Sarah herself walks the line between the woman she was - and the monstrous force of vengeance she has become.
