For any action animation I do for the last year or so, I do it roughly in #2danimation in Animation Paper. It's a free software and minimalist software.
Once I get to #MAYA I add flat shapes for the smears this one specially I hand keyed some effects from Filmora.

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts and interviews with animators and a lot of them seem to not know how to start creating that instinct of knowing where to go with an idea.
Eventually you'll build a sense of what you like, what fits, and at some point a personal style.
