The new white nationalist State Department: undertaking "a dramatic project to replace the United States’ traditional alliances with European nations, including through efforts to support ideological allies on the continent’s far-right"

The Trump administration appears to be engaged in a dramatic project to replace the United States’ traditional European alliances, with tech policy and culture wars over social media a key to the effort, Tech Policy Press contributing editor Dean Jackson writes:

The NY Times continues to be the biggest sucker in the world for bad faith bullshit, just so the publisher can claim they're not too liberal and to pretend they'll somehow convince MAGA they're being fair to them.

Despite appearances, this is not a @nytpitchbot.bsky.social joke, it's an actual @nytimes.com column by some Claremont hack who praises Hegseth for his "nuanced vision of the military’s purpose and its relationship to civilian society."

There's plenty of complexity to the story of Ian Roberts, the Black Iowa superintendent arrested by ICE.

But the way the @nytimes.com chose to frame this article is racist and shameful.

WOW. The lead plaintiff is a Latino man who's been here legally for 24 years. He was grabbed off the street by plainclothes federal agents who didn't even ASK about his status.

He was detained overnight and only released once a supervisor realized he had been illegally arrested.
PARTIES3. Plaintiff José Escobar Molina is a 47-year-old man who has lived in D.C. for 25 years. He has maintained valid Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) for El Salvador since 2001. On August 21, 2025, Mr. Escobar Molina was walking from his apartment building in Northwest D.C.to his work truck, about to start his workday, when two cars pulled up next to him. As he was about to get into his truck, plain-clothed and unidentified federal agents exited the cars and—without conducting any inquiry—seized Mr. Escobar Molina, grabbing him by the arms and legs and immediately handcuffing him. The agents arrested him without a warrant and without asking for his name, his identification, or anything about his immigration status. The agents also did not ask him where he lives, whom he lives with, how long he has lived here, or anything else about his ties to the community prior to arresting him. After ICE detained Mr. Escobar Molina overnight at its processing center in Chantilly, Virginia, the next day an ICE supervisor finally realized that he had valid TPS, which statutorily prohibits ICE from detaining him, and released him. Due tohis Latino ethnicity, Mr. Escobar Molina fears being arrested and detained again while going about his daily life in D.C.

The "America First" president is prolonging the 60-year US tradition of confronting overseas adversaries who are indistinguishable from—and mixed in with—civilian populations in their own territories…

And then, after many human rights violations and some humiliation, wondering why that didn't work.

Pete Hegseth tweets that they've hit another boat off the coast of Venezuela, killing four people
Pete Hegseth: Earlier this morning, on President Trump's orders, I directed a lethal, kinetic strike on a narco-trafficking vessel affiliated with Designated Terrorist Organizations in the USSOUTHCOM area of responsibility. Four male narco-terrorists aboard the vessel were killed in the strike, and no U.S. forces were harmed in the operation. The strike was conducted in international waters just off the coast of Venezuela while the vessel was transporting substantial amounts of narcotics - headed to America to poison our people.

Our intelligence, without a doubt, confirmed that this vessel was trafficking narcotics, the people onboard were narco-terrorists, and they were operating on a known narco-trafficking transit route. These strikes will continue until the attacks on the American people are over!!!!

Rights defenders at the US-Mexico border tried for years to warn about Border Patrol's abusive culture. We built a database of abuses (borderoversight.org/event) and several reports. Maybe 2 dozen national Democrats were responsive; the politics were tricky. We couldn't keep that work funded.

This is bad. We've seen at the border—while Biden was still president (and his administration did nothing)—what the Texas National Guard does to peaceful crowds and defenseless migrants.

This, and much more, is from us in September 2024: www.wola.org/analysis/sol...
Hope Border Institute, an El Paso-based Catholic organization that maintains a health clinic in Ciudad Juárez, reported the following treatments of Operation Lone Star-related injuries in May and June 2024:
Eight people, including three children, with razor wire and concertina wire cuts.
25 people, mostly men, injured by pepper and gas balls and rubber bullets shot by the Texas National Guard.
Two mothers and two children with intense psychological and emotional trauma after being separated from other family members at the Texas razor wire line.
In February 2024, journalists reported Texas National Guard soldiers pushing migrants, including a woman with a baby, back across the Mexican border near El Paso while shouting profanities. When journalists recorded the incidents, guards changed their behavior but pointed lasers at journalists and their equipment.
In a video published on October 3, 2023 by Al Jazeera, a Texas National Guard member in El Paso was seen standing over a prone man struggling to pass under concertina wire. The guard member taunted and abused the man, saying, “I have no mercy, animals” and stomping on the man’s hands.
In July 2023 CBS News published an email from a Texas State trooper to his superiors in Eagle Pass, detailing several disturbing situations including the trooper finding a group of migrants, including children and nursing babies, camped along the U.S.-Mexico fence line and his shift officer ordered them to “push the people back into the water to go to Mexico.” The email describes many migrants injured by the concertina wire, a woman suffering a miscarriage while tangled in the wire, and Texas troops’ denial of water to migrants, including children, in 100-degree heat.

Not a day goes by anymore without a fresh “appears to contradict the government’s allegation” story from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

There was a kid in my 6th grade who lied as often and as badly as DHS does; everyone left him alone, though, because he had a tough situation at home.

For less than what Florida and Indiana are charging US taxpayers to detain migrants in miserable conditions, you can book rooms tonight in decent hotels in central Washington DC.

From @nickmiroff.bsky.social at @theatlantic.com: www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
Those rates are significantly lower than the amounts DHS appears to be paying through its most recent contracts at state-run facilities. The commissioner of the Indiana Department of Corrections told state lawmakers last month that DHS will pay $291 a day at the “Speedway Slammer,” while guaranteeing that the facility has a minimum of 450 detainees. The average cost of a bed inside the tents at “Alligator Alcatraz” is $245 a day, records show.

Chaplin's life "is detrimental to the moral fabric of America," Mr. Rankin asserted, urging that he be kept "off the American screen and his loath-some pictures be kept from the eyes of American youth."
