Today marks the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act - a landmark piece of legislation that Judy Heumann was instrumental in the passage of.

My commitment to engaged pedagogy is an expression of political activism. Given that our educational institutions are so deeply invested in a banking system, teachers are more rewarded when we do not teach against the grain. The choice to work against the grain, to challenge the status quo, often has negative consequences. And that is part of what makes that choice one that is not politically neutral. In colleges and universities, teaching is often the least valued of our many professional tasks. It saddens me that colleagues are often suspicious of teachers whom students long to study with. And there is a tendency to undermine the professorial commitment of engaged pedagogues by suggesting that what we do is not as rigorously academic as it should be. Ideally, education should be a place where the need for diverse teaching methods and styles would be valued, encouraged, seen as essential to learning. Occasionally students feel concerned when a class departs from the banking system. I remind them that they can have a lifetime of classes that reflect conventional norms. We walked about the grounds and found them engaged in their various summer occupations, gardening, bee-keeping, repairing buildings, growing flowers in a conservatory (built and now managed by a group of particularly tough boys who began by destroying everything in sight), making simple tools and agricultural implements, etc. Not what they were doing, but their manner and attitude is, however, what stays with me--I cannot convey it; I lack the necessary literary skill."

On apprend le tronc commun à l'école, mais le savoir-faire, le toucher, c'est au contact du produit sur les chaînes de production. Et ça c'est tous les anciens qui eux se notaient, ils prenaient des notes techniques, etc. Et puis il y avait une culture, une coutume que lorsque le futur retraité partait, eh bien le petit carnet noir il le refilait, il le redonnait à son filleul. C'était, ils se transféraient, ils se transmettaient les savoir-faire opérationnels et oh, combien important... On a vu des milliers de travailleurs partir en retraite avec le carnet noir dans la poche qui a certainement fini à la poubelle, hélas, et c'était y compris pour eux une véritable douleur parce qu'ils disaient "tu te rends compte, je pars et personne ne veut savoir quelles sont les connaissances que j'ai acquises pour les transmettre. Ça, ça a été aussi un des drames de nos secteurs industriels"
