When I worked at the airport bookstore I had someone come in requesting I recommend her a "famous" book so she "didn't waste [her] time." I showed her the bestsellers and also the classics. None of this seemed to satisfy her and she left empty-handed. I'm still not sure what she was looking for. ???

In my upcoming book Gabriel was originally just my MC's boss when I needed her to get a phone call, but he wound up acquiring a husband and kid and backstory, doing a lot of Plot Things as well as being a good confidante, and being generally delightful. As a bonus, my proofreader adored him.

I *always* end up going "ah yes I need a throwaway character to make a plot thing happen" and then they end up way more significant than expected. I have learned not to give them stupid filler names because it ends up being really awkward ten chapters in when I'm writing something emotional.
