Been watching Doctor Who for many years. Thirteen is the Doctoriest Doctor. Also enjoy much other telly/movies. Currently on another attempt to get caught up with all the Skulduggery Pleasant novels. Often partake in a bit of Audible and love the graps.

A #DoctorWho Adventiversary Calendar; Day 3

Even before my interest in Doctor Who "paused" in the 90's, my VHS collection was already diminishing - 'cos I was replacing them with DVD's. I think I actually recorded over most of them 😮.... and binned the rest! 😵

With one (unintentional) exception...
The Doctor Who serial, "Pyramids of Mars" on VHS, the sole survivor of my formerly quite extensive VHS collection. Between the arrival of DVD and my interest in Who subsequently waning (for a time) during the wilderness years, most of my Doctor Who videos were either sold, binned (during a move when I had to downsize a little) or taped over (blank cassettes weren't cheap and it was basically recycling ☺️). I don't know how Pyramids survived the various cullings, as I didn't specifically mean to keep it. It's not a bad story, but is far from one of my favourites. I can only assume it got separated from the other vids and ended up in a random box in a cupboard for many years. I don't have a VHS player any more, so I won't be watching it any time soon. But it's a nice little link to the past and one of the few surviving items from my original Who collection.

Heading to a gig at the O2 Brixton this evening, which means travelling light (no backpacks allowed). So no Skulduggery Pleasant Book for the journey (cos hardback).

Instead then, I went with something a little more pocket friendly.

Happy #DoctorWho day to all. I started with Four, became a fan during Five and that grew through the 80's till the wilderness years, when I drifted away. The TVM kept the flame lit and I enjoyed the new series, particularly when Moff took over. Thirteen was/is my Doctoriest Doctor of them all 💕

8 years ago today, we got our first look at the Thirteenth Doctor's iconic costume.

I loved it from the start, it felt proper old school #DoctorWho to me. Don't get me wrong, I'd been cool with the Doctor dressing normally('ish) since the start of New Who. But this felt so properly Doctory! 🥰

I'm largely meh at the prospect of more RTD #DoctorWho And considering where he left things at the end of season 2'ish, the chances that it won't be another self-indulgent celebration of his own era are likely slim.

But it's fine. 'Cos we'll still only be ¾'s of the way through series 12b by then!☺️

To be fair, I didn't mind the story/plot of Battlefield. But the dialogue and supporting characters are the absolute antithesis of what makes Remembrance so great.

I had a couple as a kid. There was a sci-fi shop not far from me back then, and I'd pick up any Doctor Who stuff they got in with me paper-round/Saturday job wages!

Including two Doctor Who RPG's that I had no clue how to play, nor anyone in my social circle who would have wanted to anyway! 😁
Some of my 80's Who collection, including two Doctor Who Role Playing Games in the bottom right corner, at least one of which I'd purchased thinking that it was a standard board game. I had no clue what RPG's were back then and was baffled the first time I read the instructions!

Only 3 to go, and I've just realised I haven't picked any 9, 10, 11, 12 or 15 stories. I guess that makes sense given the context of this "challenge", as I'll explain in the alt text. And in the meantime...
Jenna Coleman and Tom Riley as Clara and Robin Hood, in the Doctor Who episode, "Robot of Sherwood". With regard to the absence of most New Who Doctors in this daily('ish) challenge, it does follow that a fan of my years is going to veer towards more classic stories when choosing stories that have "stayed with you". They're the stories I grew up with, the stories that shaped me as a fan. Clearly the Thirteenth Doctor has been the exception to that rule, because in many ways, her era has reminded me the most of Classic Who, and how I felt about it. Suffice to say, there are numerous Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor stories that I've thoroughly enjoyed, and both of them are in my extremely busy top 3 doctors list (along with five other Doctors!)

22/25 Cracking on with this after a little hiatus (on brand!🤭)

I've never seen this one (not a fan of the animations), but I've listened to it a lot. And it's a story that pretty much ensured Who's longevity.
Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor in his first Doctor Who story, "The Power of the Daleks". The concept of not just replacing Hartnell with a vague lookalike, but in-story, creating an entirely new persona for the Doctor was a phenomenally astute one. Combine that with Troughton's immediately charismatic and Doctor defining performance, and in just one story, the possibilities for Doctor Who's future became boundless.

21/25 Picking up where I left off (had a busy few day) with another little sidestep. I'm not a huge fan of Big Finish's output (for reasons I'll expand in the alt), but I'm happy they exist. Especially now!

So yeah, I've dipped into BIg Finish intermittently over the years. At one point, I was even subscribed for a year. But more often than not, I find myself liking the IDEA of Big Finish, more than Big Finish themselves. Getting to here former Doctors, companions, characters etc is obviously great (dodgy replacement impressionists notwithstanding). But with the good also comes some often iffy writing, some notably am dram supporting actors and more than a few decisions I'm not on board with; Not least of which, the Stepford Wifeing of the previously awesome 6th Doctor. Anyway, don't wanna turn this into a rant. By BF's standards, Vampire Weekend was decent enough, but it didn't really matter, cos Jodie and Mandip were magnificent and carried the whole thing. So as long as BF do right by Thirteen (and don't get it into their head that she needs "fixing", à la the Sixth Doctor), then we should stay golden.

19/25 My #1 Classic Who. Everything about it works; Characters, performances, story, dialogue, action, all 💯 And it's easy to forget that this was only Sophie's second story, such is her chemistry with Sylv!

18/25 The Five Doctors was my first officially released Doctor Who VHS, my "big" Christmas present in 1985 (cos it retailed at about £25 and that was a fair chunk of cash back then)

(Bonus rant in Alt text!☺️)
Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton, Peter Davison and Richard Hurndall as the Third, Second, Fifth and First Doctors in the Doctor Who 20th Anniversary episode, "The Five Doctors". I watched this so much as a kid, it's literally no ingrained on my brain. Put it on now and I can recite along with it, word for word. These days, I'm not the fan of it I once was. It's fun enough and Dicks did what he could under some pressure, but I can't get past how perfunctorily it treats the companions. Only three of them get to be even slightly proactive; K-9, when he warns Sarah Jane (for all the good it does!); Tegan for grabbing the first Doctor when the Cybermen rock up; and the Brig punching out the Master. And that's it. Other than that, they're just they're to be there. Worst treated is Susan, who gets to twist her ankle and then be useless in the Tardis. IN. THE. TARDIS. Seriously, Dicks couldn't have given her a scene where she at least contributes to moving the Tardis before the bomb goes off. She's the one cast member from the VERY FIRST EPISODE and she's given nothing!! I sure hope modern Who does better by her. Ahem.

....Totter's Lane. The Doc' and Susan don't know any better, but in an environment where the Tardis could have been any number of things without attracting any attention, she turned into something you wouldn't find in a junkyard. Hence Barbara and Ian immediately clocking it.
