El calendario es inmutable, pero las temperaturas nos dicen que los veranos se alargan 🗓️🌞

Shrubs and grasses like 𝘝𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘴-𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦𝘢 and 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘹 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘪 are leading the way.

The study was led by the researcher Mariana García Criado 🙋‍♀️ @nanitundra.bsky.social and analyzed 1,100+ plots over 40 years.

Boreal expansion isn’t just about rising #temperatures.

Shrubs thrive where tundra and forest meet 🌡️warmth and 💧moisture help them spread.

But under their cover, tundra lichens decline 🦌👥 threatening caribou, reindeer, and Indigenous Arctic traditions.

Smaller boreal species 🌱 especially #shrubs and #grasses 🌱 are better colonizers than tall ones.

They efficiently absorb nutrients and spread faster, outcompeting tundra herbs.

Borealisation is strongest in #Eurasia and #alpine zones, where tundra and forest are closest.

This shift, called BOREALISATION, could impact #climate, #wildlife 🦌 and Indigenous communities

Shrubs trap snow, warm the soil, and may accelerate #permafrost thaw, releasing ancient #carbon 🌍
