In case you’re wondering how your American friends are doing, I took my towel into the shower with me this morning and am now on my 3rd cup of coffee.

People have developed AI with computer vision, the ability to understand and respond to natural language, and the ability to process millions of bits of information a second. Meanwhile, I sit and watch while my printer *thinks* about printing the 3rd page in a set of 6.

Seconds before midnight on New Year’s Eve, a thunderstorm suddenly hit. I’m trying not to take that as an omen for 2025.

@pitchgalaxy.bsky.social and I agree that we’re living a surprisingly boring dystopia. Our socio-economic collapse should be giving vibes of Firefly, steampunk, or pirates…but instead we have limp tones of beige and stretched-out sweatpants. Where are my cottage core people? Permaculture friends?

All I really want is to own a small duplex retail space in Scotland that has a bookstore (with coffee bar) on one side and an old-timey general store on the other, and my friends will swing by around tea time to chat and pet the resident cat. How do I make this happen?

I see lots of posts with “Do not obey in advance” but I wonder if y’all have forgotten that those people CHOSE this…those CEOs and rural republicans voted for Trump’s ideas & don’t view it as early compliance; they’re actually excited to drop the façade and get started with this new agenda.

‘Tis the season for this floof to jump in the box and try to lick the fake tree to death before it gets put up. ☠️🎄🐱

We wouldn’t have said no to some of the snow that New York got, but this crunchy, understated frost is okay too.

I survived Thanksgiving with my immediate family, some of their in-laws, and their in-laws in-laws. I attribute this success to the immense amount of cheese and chocolate that were present for snacking on. No one can stay in a bad mood with a 2-year cave aged Gouda and some dark chocolate in hand.

We’ve reached the season where my fingers are so cold my phone screen doesn’t recognize them. And I thought I was only dead on the inside.

This is a good reminder to reread this gem!
Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.”

A no less vital admonition that deserves attn:

STAND OUT

“...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

I don’t think it was video games or social media that caused the decline in attention spans, I think it was the invention of the PowerPoint deck. No deep thoughts allowed, only quippy, jargony keywords. Efficiency! Prioritization! Actionable! ☠️

This is the first time I’ve read this, and I love it 😂
“If Adam Picked the Apple” by Danielle Coffyn
Love this. Reminds me of “If Men Could Menstruate” by Gloria Steinem

More to the point, don’t send unsolicited junk mail if you’re actually concerned about resource consumption and recycling. This “Please Recycle” on the back of junk sent out to tens of thousands of people is lip service.

Times of oppression tend to produce intense upticks in art, as we try to process and protest what’s happening around us. Everyone I know is suddenly taking up writing (including 🙋🏻‍♀️), or creating music, or picking up a paintbrush. Or a can of spray paint. Or a Molotov cocktail. No judgement.
