Learn how words/phrases sound online. Don't worry if you get a verb tense wrong, and you can miss connecting words like "a" or "un". The goal is to quickly express the danger and/or someone's rights in a basically understandable way.

Make it a habit to practice so you are ready to use them.

Be able to quickly communicate that you can't effectively communicate in Spanish, without wasting valuable time in a crisis:

- I want to help you, but I don't speak Spanish = Quiero ayudar, pero no hablo español
- I don't understand = No entiendo
- I don't know = No sé [sounds like "say"]

This one is tempting to ask but if you don't speak well and are already struggling with words, avoid open-ended questions which add to confusion and waste time when they reply and you blank because you don't understand enough to communicate back.

"Do you need help? = Necesitas ayuda?

- Don't consent to a search = No consientas un inspección
- Ask for a lawyer = Pide [PEE-day] un abogado [ah-boh-GAH-do]
