Welcome to the home of #labdaptations ! My name is Kat and I am a Genetics PhD student, navigating science with a disability. Early in my grad school journey, I discovered that accessible lab equipment/tools were lacking, making it difficult for me to perform experiments.

A teal gloved hand closes green PCR lids onto green PCR tubes. The thumb joint in the photo is hyperextended is pressure is applied through the thumb joint to close the lids on the tubes.

Pressure is applied through the Cap-It tool from the forearm instead of the finger joints, reducing joint strain, fatigue, & reliance on fine motor coordination. All 8 tubes can be closed in one graceful sliding motion!
A teal gloved hand holds a bright blue half-moon shaped plastic tool (cap it tool) via a handle. The hand is pushing down on the blue tool, to attach a strip of green lids to green tubes via a groove on the Cap-it Tool opposite the handle. The green tubes/lids reside in a bright orange grid.

#labdaptations Cap-It Tool feature

No more closing PCR strip tubes with your thumbs and fingers; let the ergonomic Cap-It Tool do the work for you!

Check out the eppendorf tube opener #labdaptations in action!

My thumb hypermobility and lack of hand strength make opening eppendorf tubes difficult (left video). With the use of the eppendorf tube opener, I can open tubes without pain or dislocations (right video).

You know you're having a good time at the Cartilage GRC when...

Thank you to the organizers for an amazing conference!

#labdaptations alert🚨! This tube opener is great for individuals with limited hand strength/mobility or tremors. I use it to keep my joints from hyperextending/dislocating, which helps to decrease pain.
A sky blue tube rack contains a clear eppendorf tube. A teal gloved hand uses a dark blue lever to open the eppendorf tube with minimal force/strength.

As I created my own tools that enabled me to do my work, I decided to start sharing them with the scientific community, with the hope that these tools could benefit others. From this, #labdaptations (lab adaptations) was born.
