49 China-Based International Routes Canceled—Mass Refunds
Source: OT-Team(G), 光明网 Chinese airlines have canceled 49 flight routes to Japan, with free refunds and rescheduling for affected travelers. On the afternoon of January 26, China’s three major carriers—Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern—jointly announced that tickets issued before January 26 for flights to, from, or via Japan scheduled between March 29 and October 24, 2026, can be refunded or rescheduled free of charge. The three airlines are leading the move, and other Chinese carriers are expected to follow suit. This development signals a significant contraction in China–Japan air travel for 2026. Major holiday periods—including Qingming, Labor Day, summer vacations, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day—are likely to see a notable reduction in Chinese tourists visiting Japan. Data show that in 2025, 9.09 million travelers from the Chinese mainland visited Japan, up 30% from 6.98 million in 2024. However, this growth was concentrated in the first ten months of the year, with monthly arrivals averaging over 800,000. In contrast, the number of mainland Chinese tourists traveling to Japan fell sharply to 560,000 in November and 330,000 in December 2025. Since November 15, 2025, Chinese carriers have been canceling a significant number of Japan-bound flights. According to flight monitoring platform DAST, the cancellation rate of flights from he Chinese mainland to Japan reached 47.2% in January 2026, up 7.8 percentage points from December 2025. By January 26, all flights on 49 routes scheduled for February 2026 had been canceled. Japan’s government statistics, released on January 15, show that 348,700 Chinese nationals (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents) visited Japan in December 2025, a year-on-year decline of approximately 40% and a month-on-month drop of about 35% compared with November 2025. With Chinese airlines continuing to scale back Japan routes, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Japan in 2026 is expected to be significantly affected.

Lost Items, Smart Alerts: The WeChat Pay Feature Nobody Knew
Source: OT-Team(G), 法治网 A recent topic—“I never knew WeChat Pay had this feature”—has climbed to the top of Chinese social media trending lists, sparking widespread discussion among users. According to posts shared online, some diners reported receiving a lost-item reminder from a merchant shortly after paying their bill. The notification appeared directly within the WeChat Pay interface, alerting them that they may have left something behind at the restaurant. In response to inquiries, Tencent customer service confirmed that the feature is currently supported only by selected merchants. If a merchant does not have access to this function, they may still attempt to notify customers by contacting customer service through other means. Tencent also addressed privacy concerns, stating that merchants do not have access to users’ personal information. The notification is delivered via the official WeChat Pay account and displays only transaction-related details for that specific payment, without revealing any additional personal data. Many users expressed surprise, commenting that they had no idea WeChat Pay offered such a capability. The discussion has since expanded into a broader conversation about lesser-known but highly practical WeChat features that users may be missing out on. Here are several that have recently drawn attention: Turning Image Tables into Editable Documents If you receive a screenshot of an Excel spreadsheet while away from your computer and need to make edits, WeChat can help. By long-pressing the image and selecting “Search,” the app can recognize the table and convert it into an online document, allowing users to edit and manage the data directly. Creating a One-Person Group Chat Instead of sending all files to the “File Transfer Assistant,” which can quickly become cluttered, users can create group chats that include only themselves. By tapping the “+” icon in the chat interface, selecting “Start a Group Chat,” and choosing the “Join Private Group” option, users can enter any four-digit number to create a private group. Renaming these groups allows them to function as organized, self-managed folders. Prioritizing Important Group Messages Previously, even after enabling “Do Not Disturb” for group chats, users would still receive notifications when someone tagged “@all members.” Now, WeChat allows more granular control. Under group settings, users can choose to receive notifications only for messages that mention them directly, tag all members, or relate to group announcements. Up to four key group members can also be designated so their messages still trigger alerts. These understated yet practical tools have prompted many users to rethink how well they actually know the app they use every day. Are these features familiar to you? And are there other WeChat functions you consider indispensable? Users are encouraged to share their tips and discoveries in the comments.

Int’l Airlines & DGCA Crack Down: Power Banks Banned In-Flight
Source: OT-Team(G) Starting January 15, 2026, Lufthansa passengers will no longer be allowed to use external batteries during flights, whether on smartphones, tablets, or laptops, the airline announced. Passengers may still bring power banks on board, but with strict limitations. Devices with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) are allowed, while larger models require airline approval. Power banks are strictly prohibited in checked luggage, a rule already enforced by airlines worldwide. The storage and use of power banks on flights will also be more strictly regulated. During the flight, passengers cannot connect power banks to onboard power outlets or USB ports, except when used for essential medical devices. Passengers are prohibited from storing power banks in overhead compartments. Only storage in the seat pocket in front, under the front-row seat, or in carry-on bags is permitted. Lufthansa is not alone in adopting this policy. In the Middle East, Emirates Airlines implemented a complete ban on power bank use in-flight starting October 2025. Similarly, in the Asia-Pacific region, airlines including Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways prohibit charging or using power banks during flights. In South Korea, airlines such as Asiana require passengers to keep power banks in their carry-on luggage and ban their use or storage in overhead bins. In Australia, Qantas prohibited in-flight use of power banks starting December 2025. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also issued new regulations banning the use of power banks to charge electronic devices during domestic flights. Updated safety guidelines specify that passengers must keep power banks and similar spare lithium batteries in carry-on luggage and are prohibited from placing them in overhead compartments. These measures reflect a global effort to enhance flight safety by reducing the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

China Railways Just Released New Free Refunds—and Quiet Cars
Source: OT-Team(G), 中国铁路 China’s railway operator has announced two passenger-focused service upgrades aimed at improving ticketing convenience and onboard travel comfort. Free Refund Service for Accidental Ticket Purchases Starting January 19, the 12306 platform—including its website and mobile app—will introduce a time-limited free refund service for passengers who accidentally purchase train tickets. The policy applies to tickets with travel dates on or after February 2. Under the new measure, if a passenger mistakenly purchases a ticket, they may apply for a free online refund within 30 minutes after payment is completed, provided the request is made more than four hours before the train’s departure. No refund fee will be charged, allowing passengers to correct errors quickly and at no cost. The service covers tickets purchased through 12306 using electronic payment or reward points for domestic passenger trains, as well as cross-border trains with Hong Kong West Kowloon as the departure or arrival station. Refunds will be processed through the original payment channel: cash payments will be returned accordingly, while reward points will be credited back with their original validity period unchanged. Each passenger may use this free refund service for one order per calendar day. The policy does not apply to ticket changes, advance reservations, or waitlisted purchases. China’s existing tiered refund policy remains in effect, and refunds made within the standard free-refund period do not count toward the daily limit for accidental purchase refunds. If an accidental purchase occurs at an offline ticket window, passengers must report it immediately, and staff will assist with reissuing the ticket on the spot. Railway authorities said the initiative is designed to reduce financial losses caused by accidental purchases and better protect passenger rights while enhancing the overall ticket-buying experience. Expansion of “Quiet Carriage” Service In a separate move to improve onboard comfort, the railway department will expand its “Quiet Carriage” service starting February 1. The service will be extended to all “D” and “G” series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains, except for sleeper EMU services. With this expansion, more than 8,000 trains nationwide will offer Quiet Carriages. A Quiet Carriage is designed to provide a relatively calm travel environment by lowering broadcast volumes, guiding passenger behavior, and offering attentive, low-volume service from train staff. Carriages are marked with standardized signage and service reminder cards, and disposable earplugs are available upon request. The service follows the principles of voluntary participation, shared responsibility, and moderate staff intervention, allowing passengers to choose whether to travel in a Quiet Carriage. Trains offering the service are marked with a “Quiet” indicator on the 12306 booking interface. Passengers must agree to the Quiet Carriage code of conduct before purchasing a seat. The guidelines require passengers to keep noise to a minimum, set electronic devices to silent or vibrate mode, leave the carriage to make or receive phone calls, use headphones when playing audio or video, and ensure that children are supervised to avoid loud behavior or crying. Train staff will provide friendly reminders and guidance when necessary to maintain a peaceful environment. China Railway first piloted the Quiet Carriage concept in December 2020 on major high-speed routes such as the Beijing–Shanghai and Chengdu–Chongqing lines. The service has since expanded to several other high-speed corridors, including routes linking the Chinese mainland with Hong Kong, and has been well received by passengers. Under the expanded arrangement, single EMU trainsets with 8 or 16 cars will include one Quiet Carriage, while 17-car long “Fuxing” trainsets will feature two. For coupled EMU trains, each set will have one Quiet Carriage. Passengers can select the option “Please prioritize assigning a Quiet Carriage seat” when purchasing tickets via 12306 or ticket vending machines. Railway authorities encourage passengers choosing Quiet Carriage seats to follow the agreed guidelines, helping to jointly create a civilized, comfortable, and tranquil travel environment.
