CRLAF’s thoughts are with Huabing Xie's family as they mourn this devastating loss. Migrant & immigrant voices will not be diminished. We continue to fight as a collective against unlawful arrests & the mistreatment of detainees. We stand firm in our commitment to dignity & justice for all.

The details of Xie’s death remain unclear: ICE says staff used CPR and a defibrillator, but local groups stress the need for transparency and independent investigation. The facility has faced past allegations of substandard care, staff shortages, and a lack of accountability.

This is the second in-custody death in California within weeks, raising alarms about conditions and oversight in detention facilities.

These alarming numbers reflect early signs of a massive structural shift. The aging of the U.S.-born labor force, combined with shrinking immigration pathways, risks long-term erosion of labor capacity in sectors that rely on immigrant skill, stamina, and resilience.
crlafoundation.bsky.social
As the immigrant workforce contracts, key sectors such as agriculture face rising uncertainty. Sudden workforce depletion impacts the economic stability, community cohesion, and access to food.
crlafoundation.bsky.social
In first eight months of 2025, foreign-born, previously authorized workers in U.S. labor force dropped by 1.1 million due to mass deportations, termination of Temporary Protected Status & humanitarian parole, & cap on refugee admissions.

Supporting structures that engage residents in their spoken language, in their local and preferred safe meeting spaces, and uphold our foundational civil rights is essential.

In a state where farmworkers feed entire communities and drive local economies, mental health is directly tied to physical health. When wellness falters, so does the capacity to work, advocate, and provide care for others.

Along with vital disaster relief, this engagement reflects CRLAF’s commitment to rebuilding community trust, belonging, and resilience as the tumultuous political climate impacts landscapes and lives.
