I do listen to the same song over and over, but I almost never rewatch films, even ones I love. The thrill of enjoying a film for me is the journey of discovery, which is numbed by familiarity. I tend to leave a big enough gap between rewatching something that it becomes a fresh experience again.

As a bonus Dano often plays slimy roles which skew uncomfortably close to Tarantino’s actual manner, rather than the wannabe cool/tough guy he desperately tries to project.

By considerable margin my two most rewatched Bonds, which I never tire from seeing again.

Don’t have HBO in the UK so can’t check, but have they done some sort of pointless HDR conversion? That’s the only reason I can think of to go back to the source for such a recent show.

Nah it’s definitely both incomprehensible and illogical

Nothing but truth in this thread; it’s a beautiful looking mess. Jyn is a miscast non-character.

Immediately rewound and watched the whole sequence again when I first saw it.

I think you’ve just cost me £30, Jake.

I know Hyams LOVES shadows, especially in his model shots, meaning the previous master was super dark in places. Curious whether there’s any extra detail in the Arrow version.

My favourite as a teenager, but I appreciate the leanness of the original more with age. Del Toro’s aesthetic is incredible when used well (the club/reaper autopsy) but does occasionally slip into gaudiness. Very silly that they brought Whistler back only to kill him again in an identical way.

…to keep file sizes down. They’re basically only good for specular details like flames, the sun, explosions etc.

Like I said, the only place you gain more detail on HDR is in the highlights. Just because those highlights are brighter does not mean a) you should lift the rest of the image or b) that the rest of the image has more detail in the shadows. PQ curve assigns less information to the highlights…
October 13, 2025 at 2:21 PM
Films are being mastered to that level because it’s pleasing to the eye, leaving the highlights to peak often looks absolutely horrible and cheap in HDR.
October 13, 2025 at 1:19 PM
The only place HDR shows more detail in any meaningful way is in the highlights. That’s how the PQ curve is designed. Any difference there might be in the shadows is effectively imperceptible; I should know, I compare them daily. But your original complaint was about films ‘only’ mastered to 300nits

Something doesn’t look better just for being brighter. There’s no obligation for filmmakers (or devs, for that matter) to make something high contrast just because there’s a HDR version. It’s a container, not a ‘look’.

In his case I don’t really see it as selling out, I think he just has a fascination with new technology and potential filmmaking methods. Obviously AI absolutely sucks so I don’t think anything good will come of it, but at least it’s personal intrigue rather than OpenAI writing him a cheque.

Same, they all blur into one for me

Is this the one with the weird Tetsuo/cyberpunk motorbike death? Tbh I think the only decent sequel is New Nightmare.
October 8, 2025 at 7:52 AM
Many of the classic episodes everyone remembers are from that first season, Tombs being the main two.
September 29, 2025 at 7:54 PM
I wonder if we’ll ever get a remaster of the sequel, I quite liked it at the time. Another cult Monolith classic like Shogo.

I am praying you include the option to play with the original graphics, because this looks absolutely fucking terrible.
September 25, 2025 at 4:17 PM
The making-of is fascinating if you haven’t seen it, and not just for all the footage of Fincher losing his mind. The Alien everyone assumes is CGI is actually old school puppeteering, and the only actual CGI shot in the film is the Alien’s head cracking at the end.
September 22, 2025 at 12:51 PM
You can draw a straight line from the backlash to Alien 3 to all the crybabies whinging about The Last Jedi, so many people clearly just want pandering rehashes.
September 22, 2025 at 11:12 AM
I’ll defend all of the original four but definitely think Alien 3 is better than Resurrection, which has lots of extremely cool stuff but is saddled with a bad script and score. 3 is tonally consistent and absolutely packed with amazing actors.
