I got to develop the conference badges for PhreakNIC this year, alongside @itsamenathan.xyz and Mog!

PN’s first electronic badge, and we didn’t even need to design a custom PCB for it! The guts of these badges are discarded electronic shelf labels that had dead, non-replaceable batteries.

Made some progress on these ZBD epop 55c-RB ESLs this weekend! Ended up soldering jumpers straight to the board for now because my pogo pins were too large. Was able to get some basic text and symbol rendering working thanks to a ton of prior art by @dmitry.gr ❤️

Got my hands on a bunch of ZBD epop electronic shelf labels that I’m hoping to flash with openepaperlink.de (or at least parts of their work). These aren’t proper “EPaper”, but are bistable LCDs which also hold their image mostly indefinitely without power.

First time at the MIT Flea today! I’ve been meaning to make it out there for a while now, and I finally did! Lots of cool stuff and awesome people!

This weekend included some Eurorack synth and electronics soldering therapy! Took a trip to synthCube in Waltham to pick up a couple of module kits I had ordered online, and also put together the Castor & Pollux v2 I was able to snag from Winterbloom’s garage sale last month.

My 3.3V LiPo + Power Path PCBs are in! Ridiculously tiny parts, making for a pretty tiny “module”. Tested most of it using the Flipper Zero IO pins because they were handy and so far so good! Still need to test the low voltage cut-off, but that’s about it!

Love getting PCB production/assembly files from JLCPCB! It starts to feel real from that point, and then I just gotta sit in anticipation while it gets made!

So many of my PCB projects end up needing a LiPo, charging, 3v3 reg, and the circuitry for that. It’s a handful of really tiny parts and a good chunk of design each time, and that usually drives me to get the board assembled for me. So instead I made a module with all of that, and ordered in bulk!

If you’ve not messed with a GC9A01 circular LCD display before, they’re really neat! (Also super-excited that @adafruit.com shouted out my CircuitPython DisplayIO driver library in the listing ☺️)

Finally designed and 3D printed new “cheeks” for my DIU EuroRack modular synth case! Next time I’m down at Artisans Asylum, I’ll laser cut some acrylic or MDF to slot into the back to mount the bus board and PSU. Learning a bit more FreeCAD each time!
February 3, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Upgraded my FreeCAD-designed show hooks! These new glass shower walls don’t have a metal frame to “clip” the hooks to like my old ones, so I designed a little pocket for a TPU “pad” to give the hook a little more grip! First round caused too many hooks to get caught up in the laundry…

This is so neat! Happy to see local governments and communities find new and effective ways of keeping engaged with people ❤️
We've launched an official City of Boston starter pack to make it easy to follow City departments. This starter pack will stay up to date as more teams join the Bluesky community. Give them a follow!

get in loser we’re buying electrical components for a side project we don’t have time for 🚀

Picked up a new 3D printer a few weeks ago, and have been once again elated to be printing useful things. FreeCAD has gotten so much better than the last time I used it, and OpenSCAD is still so very useful.

Spent some time this weekend putting together a demo for printing labels on a Brother QL label printer directly in the browser using WebUSB! It was super cool seeing it come together, even if there is still a decent chunk of work left to do.

Did a talk on building Flipper Zero apps using the brand new JS/TS API and SDK this weekend at PhreakNIC! It was great chatting with people about ideas on what they want to build, and giving out some cute little blinky add-on boards!

I made myself a list of reminders to check before I order PCBs; if you might find that sort of thing useful I posted it here: github.com/Blenster/PCB...
Feel free to give me ideas/suggestions for additional things.

Got my assembled PCBs back from JLCPCB! Have a couple of bugs (my fault) that I was able to work around, but overall super excited for this badge!
Tested the Li-ion charging and power path, cap touch pads, the LCD, ambient light sensor, and of course got Circuit Python up and running!

Progress on my Magic 8-Badge PCB! Trying to get this fun CircuitPython-compatible board wrapped up and ordered before my CircuitPython talk at PhreakNIC in Nov. It’ll have a round color LCD, USB Li-ion charging and data, touchpads, 9DoF and ambient light sensors, all powered by RP2040 (Pi Pico) MCU!

JLCPCB came through! I wrote up a quick CircuitPython script to test it, by outputting MIDI notes based on the sockets that have the bearings in them! (A shame we still can’t post videos on Bluesky)

No luck with my illegal (think design rules, not court of law) PCB through OSHPark, but that was a risk well-presented and accepted. They’re beautiful though! Trying JLCPCB next, as a low-cost gamble. Got the production files sent to me, and it looks like they have the router cuts across the pads!

I never followed up on this! The CircuitPython library is up and merged into the Community Bundle: github.com/adafruit/Cir...

These little displays are awesome because they’re full-color backlit LCDs, super-tiny, and super-cheap ($11+$5s/h for 10pcs from AliExpress)!
After a little soldering, and some typo-hunting, I was able to get my displayio-compatible library working for the GC9D01 0.99” LCD screen in CircuitPython! Library needs a little clean-up and then will hopefully be published to the CircuitPython Community Bundle! I love this tiny, tiny screen!

Made an experimental PCB design tonight, after talking with OSH Park support a bit today! Trying make a device where steel ball bearings can be used as stored-state inputs by connecting two contacts. Breaking some rules by using a drilled slot to cut through a plated drill, but it might just work!

3D printed an extra batteries holder for my digital calipers case today! I love when it fits perfectly the first time 🤩
