Didn't expect a description practice scene to be the first writing thing I shared, but I'm really happy with this! And would love to know what people think these creatures look like!
For the small village, the morning had been peaceful. Everyone was focused on their tasks, trying to make sure everything in their new home was ready for the coming winter. That peace was shattered when one of the townsfolk who had gone out to forage came back in a rush, shaking and frantic, barely able to communicate at first. In an instant, they were surrounded by worried faces, the crowd all desperate to know what had them so rattled. Once given a chance to catch their breath and really think, they were finally able to speak and tell the whole town gathered around them about what they saw, doing their best to describe the monstrous creatures they’d encountered. They spoke of creatures that towered over them, easily hundreds, if not thousands or more times larger than they were, with incredibly long bodies, walking on two limbs, with another two sticking out of the tops of their torsos, those two splitting at the ends, only to branch out into five distinct feet. The alone had the townsfolk whispering amongst each other, doubt starting to spread. Yet the forager continued, seeming not to notice the shift in attitude amongst the others. They spoke of the masses of antennae that hung limply from their heads, moving not quite as one unit, but in waves, dangling down their backs and around their squishy, bulbous faces, beady eyes that seemed to focus intently on specific points that the forager couldn’t understand the importance of. Whatever the importance though, whenever they seemed to focus on the right thing, their faces would split almost in half, revealing a maw of teeth the forager assured the townsfolk were the size of their head! And the sounds those maws made, complex, confusing noises that boomed through the woods, either bringing others closer or somehow repelling them, the louder they were, the more likely the others were to stop sometimes, when others they would rush over, leaving the forager feeling like the whole world was shaking around them as they watched, unable to understand them. No one could seem to calm the forager or get them to stop rambling, them continuing to talk about the colorful patches of loose flesh that hung around their bodies, that didn’t seem to quite move with the rest of their bodies, often blowing back, or flattening, as if gravity affected those pieces of them differently than the rest of their bodies. Another townsfolk, a builder known for their calm, steady attitude, tried to step forward and assure the forager that somehow, this must be their imagination playing tricks on them, that such a creature couldn’t possibly exist. Unfortunately, that just made the forager more frantic, insisting these creatures were the size of small trees, shaking the ground with each step and shattering branches that got in their way, only to seem to not even notice the destruction they left in their wake, whole roads’ worth of foliage trampled for their paths. Finally, someone was able to convince them to go rest, and as the forager was escorted away, the townsfolk were left to whisper amongst each other, unsure how much of that description to believe, and where the forager could have gotten these ideas if they weren’t true.
