Joyful pandemonium reigned in Corvallis for about 3 hours today at the No Kings event, with thousands of people mobbing the downtown streets. I've never had so much fun at a protest organized for a desperately serious purpose, that of reclaiming democracy.

Enjoy this picture of the Portland Japanese Garden. Portland is being its usual quirky self as it faces fascist autocratic threats. There is no need for troops from other states to invade Portland and instigate violence. That would be a very costly and ridiculous waste of resources.

Clever barista at Imagine Coffee Company! Latte decorated with cute kitten face. You can even see its whiskers!

Labor Day protest in Corvallis: more like a street fair than a march. Mobs gathered at the Benton County Courthouse. Local chapters of major organizations had booths (e.g., Indivisible, Third Act, Good Trouble). Participants could write postcards and make signs. There was lots of drive by honking.

A gorgeous spring day for the second protest in Corvallis, Oregon. The crowd was about the same as on April 12 (2-3,000). Social justice stations were set up again--support Gaza and Ukraine, defend science and the EPA, bring food for the food banks, and others. Saw beautiful flags and clever signs.

How do we feel about our tax dollars going to subsidize these mega-corporations? Corporate welfare running amok? Good Investment to benefit us all?

Scenes from Hands Off protest in Corvallis, OR. Gathered at Brent's house for coffee/sign-making. Walked to protest at courthouse. Huge crowd! Stream of cars driving by, people honking, waving, and holding signs out their windows. Well done, Corvallis.

When the world is scary, sometimes it helps just to take a few minutes to appreciate a softly glowing sunset, and be grateful for the peaceful closing of another day.

I picked up my copy of Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde's book, _How We Learn to Be brave_, at our locally owned bookstore yesterday. I think I'm going to need it! It was sold out everywhere just a few weeks ago. The publisher produced a new printing very quickly.

View at dinner this evening: snow on the Cascade peaks and a full moon. In these times, the simple joys keep us grounded in what is real. The steadiness of good friends. Hot coffee and treats on a cold morning. A bike ride. The permanence of the Cascade peaks. The beauty of the full moon rising.

The temperature hovered around freezing as we started off on our bike ride this morning. It never did warm up much. We were happy to arrive at the warm coffee shop for drinks and treats and much merriment. Here we are at Imagine Coffee Shop.

Here's Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde's book. Apparently, it is sold out everywhere, which is great! I ordered a copy from our local bookstore, but it won't be available for a while. Tonight, we sent post cards to thank her for her brave sermon on the true meaning of Christian love and compassion.

Tomorrow I plan to honor two great Americans: Jimmy Carter, for whom we are still appropriately mourning, and Martin Luther King, Jr., a great civil rights activist and faith leader, from whom I have learned much. Flawed humans they were, as are we all, but they worked on behalf of all Americans.

Waffles at Wise Cracks (Corvallis, Oregon). While we enjoyed them, we planned the financial contributions we want to make in 2025 to causes and people important to us. A very satisfying start to the new year!

Ending 2024 in a healthy way, with a bike ride to coffee with friends. Considering our smiles, you wouldn't guess it was a very chilly, foggy morning!

I'm so tired of end-stage corporate capitalism running amok. A healthy dose of democratic socialism would be so renewing and refreshing.
