More critical work from the Chicago Sun-Times (by Ashlee Rezin).

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

That “raid” in Chicago is a dark story.

It’s a lot to process.

These are the top Republican donors of 2024. Since Speaker Johnson shut the House — stopping critical work — to stop any Epstein file disclosures, I have to assume that most of the biggest are in the files somewhere.

Mellon? Uihlein? Adelson? The victims already mentioned Singer.

I don't want to sound alarmist, but this is where we are.

And yes, we should be more than just alarmed.

You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.

Everything they are doing & saying right now is very obviously meant to clear the way for mass repressive violence.

Fact checking is not going to do shit.

Talking about kitchen table issues is not going to do shit.

We need open, unapologetic defiance & conflict.

X/Shitter remains a weird wasteland. I signed up so that I could read specific posts. I'm just lurking. I haven't posted anything there or replied to anything.

And my account was just locked for unspecified violations of X rules of engagement.

I can solve that problem for them.

There’s an essay to be written about how maga patriotism is just shitty fandom. Anyone who follows sports knows fans like this, it’s always the ref’s fault, the other team doesn’t exist, there’s some plot/player/coach holding the team back otherwise they’d always win easy bsky.app/profile/atru...

Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

I'll challenge that. Why do you assume that this distorted view wasn't deliberate? Do you have evidence that they meant to report on Portland accurately, and just missed?

The answer that requires the fewest assumptions is that the NYT is publishing biased work.

FYI, I'd love to be wrong.

Mike Johnson is extreme, but the Republican magic is simple: we don't believe an adult can say things that plainly false.

We all struggle to be good, so seeing anyone that ethically adrift leaves us horrified. We literally can't believe it, so we look away.

TL;DR: they're fucking weirdos.

Mike Johnson is just more extreme than most. The GOP's magic is simple: we don't understand how an adult says things that plainly false.

We all struggle to be good, so anyone that ethically adrift leaves us cringing in horror. We literally can't believe it.

Are they immune to shame and irony? How?

Imagine believing this. They’ve refused to expand Medicaid in Tennessee costing us $30 billion and counting

Demonic sexual performances during its halftime show.

Well, shit! Now I really do need to learn Spanish. Sounds like it'll be better than any halftime show I can remember.

Background: 'muscles' are really groups of bundles of individual fibers. You need to get them firing at the same time. Thankfully, all that means is, if you do stuff, you get stronger.

But it's easy to overwork (too sore) or even hurt yourself in the beginning. Go extra light the few weeks.

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.

I'm a long-distance runner. Here's the secret: find a pace that's slow enough that you can keep it up forever. It'll be REALLY slow — slower than you walk — so don't freak out.

Run-walk-run is great, too, but keep searching for that pace that doesn't exhaust you. *Lightly* challenge your body.
cryptosantra.bsky.social
That's a critical part (says the 70-year-old guy), but let me temper that.

Exercise is powerful, but remember the basics: if you're not having fun, you won't keep it up. The goal is to lightly — lightly! — challenge your body. It's really easy to overdo things in the beginning.

Go slow; have fun.

Pretend Dems win a big majority in 2026. What will they do?

I have no idea. They won't tell us. They're driving us to give them huge powers, but for what? That's weird, right?

We need the Dem leaders to tell us their intentions NOW, not later. I mean, unless they want us to sit this one out, too.

Thanks, although I was more 'fingers crossed' for the Trump Death Watch.

Maybe next time!

Sure, qualified immunity is a disaster, but on the plus side, Justice Clarence Thomas just admitted that we don't need to abide by any of his or the Roberts' Courts' opinions beyond their temporary majority status. So, qualified immunity will not stand.

Unless Democrats just fold again, I suppose.

In a little-covered speech, the Supreme Court justice explained how he thinks the court should reverse rulings conservatives don’t like.
