On top of that, I got to play it with friends who'd grown up with it. That elevated the experience significantly. It would have been more frustrating and tedious if I'd just been sitting there by myself. Perhaps that speaks to the fact that external factors can play into enjoyment.

I played the original Dragon Warrior/Quest on the NES for the first time. It was a barebones, slightly clunky, and antiquated experience. But it had decent graphics and music for the time, and its writing was entertaining. It wasn't incredible but it was enjoyable and it did what it set out to.
