The session also marked several firsts:
• the first year this elective ran in the MPhil programme
• the first university-level UNSC simulation on AMOC collapse
• the first time a multilateral response to this risk, and through the UN system, was formulated

The exercise provided hands-on insight into how multilateral cooperation—with both its strengths and limitations—could advance the governance of global catastrophic risks, particularly where scientific urgency meets geopolitical constraints.

Students represented UNSC member states, drafted position papers, debated national positions, and negotiated a formal Security Council response. They ultimately adopted a resolution identifying AMOC collapse as a major security issue requiring coordinated global action through the UN system.
