In a Proof of Payment system, this shouldn’t be an issue. It only gums things up when you scan all passengers’ “boarding passes” at a “gate” which is not PoP.

How would a flaperon getting tossed around in the surf & tides (for an unknown number of days) have its barnacle size distribution altered before being found? It seems reasonable that the longer ones would be more likely to fall off, possibly reversing the “timer”
