Starting a thread (or possibly a thread of threads) to capture things I post from time to time.

Yes, it's very impressive. Meanwhile Strictly has got to the point where I've heard of precisely one of this year's contestants - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

It probably never occurred to Henry II to have Thomas Beckett shot in the head with a pepper ball.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Badenoch's imagination isn't poor so much as living under a railway bridge in a cardboard box.

It is amusing watching Caroline Lucas, for instance, unironically arguing that nuclear power takes too long, for long enough to commission a nuclear power station.

The other image that springs to mind is that of a certain kind of plantation or mine manager somewhere like Malaya in the 1930s. Lovely house, active cocktail- and sport-based social life, most of the hard work done by locals.

They give the impression of yearning to live in the Raj c. 1900.

Visited Portland with Mrs K very briefly back in 2016. Seem to remember its Time Out guide was nothing but sex shops and strip clubs. When in Rome etc...

You know things are bad when a Rest Is History episode about Enoch Powell feels timely.

I assume 'civilisational atrophy' is just a wanky way of saying that since 1945 the Church of England has become an irrelevance to most people.

Yes, looks like a First World War-vintage field gun.

Today in 1940, cameraman Harry Rignold films #blitz bomb damage at the old War Office building in London. Close-ups include a shot of a rooftop telephone cable sheared by shrapnel. #otd #ww2 #history

It's quite something when a Conservative wants to argue, in effect, that Shakespeare isn't a worthwhile topic for university study.

One's a tedious reactionary buffoon devoid of all charisma, and the other's Arnold Rimmer.

There's a joke about the Whigs in here somewhere...

No, no, I think there’s not enough puppetry work in modern political oratory.

Oh dear I seem to have fallen down a rabbit hole marked 'Is Hong Kong part of Southeast Asia?'

Funnily enough the slow motion bit here perfectly captures the feeling when you get caught with a throw like this - a fraction of a second which feels like forever where you realise that you're airborne and there's nothing you can do about it except prepare for landing.
