to avoid having to make it look fully functional but retain the interface, you could let the player type in it but not let their reply go through, with a "message not delivered" or "connection issue" error, could that fit thematically / mechanically?

loved it as a teenager, weirdly felt easier to get through than the main LOTR books! it's also got one my favorite creation myths at the start, love the role of music

thanks! figured out a neat pipeline with blender that lets me do most of these in 3D and with some processing generate 2D stuff like this that i'm pretty happy with
