MY CROSS WORKED! hurray! First cross tested set berries! I would have let it ripen more but this one was damaged by a cultivator. Now to check the seeds

Ornamentals seem like such a delight to work with. What a joy to be responsible for beauty :)

I'm a plant breeder working on making new varieties of berries 🫐

Why am I here if I work with berries? I also have a small project trying to create perennial sweet corn. The project is still in early stages, but it's been interesting. Thanks for having us, @cimmyt.bsky.social

Grains that grow back every year have deeper roots and require less work to grow, since farmers don't have to plant every year. Better for farms and soils.

The Savanna Institute has a number of additional black currant cultivars that are resistant to WPBR but aren't available though home nurseries (only wholesale to farmers). We'll be exploring partnering with nurseries this year or next to make them accessible to gardeners.

Though its easy for me to say "This currant doesn't taste as good as others" because I have the immense privileged of having tried dozens of different cultivars. If a garden visitor has never had a currant before their first one will be the best one they've ever had!
