These people are just being dishonest. I'm a documented Mayflower descendant, and white people definitely also call people other than their parents' siblings "aunt".

He identifies as a catholic Christian, but this instance on gratitude is really more pagan, like in ancient Roman practices. Gratitude was tied into their hierarchical belief system.
