It can also teach how to self edit, how to work with a team, and it can help you connect with other devs and build an audience. Not that jams are only first timers, but first timers often skip straight to "I'm gonna spend years making my very first game" when two weeks in a jam could be so valuable.

Game jams and others like them teach you how to work under deadlines and learn limits and actually release something, and they can also lead to some of the most clever, creative games around BECAUSE of restrictions and specifications. It's great experience for aspiring game devs.
