Idk why everyone these days is trying to go for a "make a funny quirk sad in retrospective" type thing. That only really worked with gravity falls because an older relative eventually losing their cognition is a relatable event that does end up putting their "funny" behavior into context.

y'know I don't think initially with Harry Potter things like class inequality, house elves and mistreatment of other races were even necessarily jk's own shitty opinions, I imagine she just found out about actual racial injustice in the US and went "that sounds cool!
