that's not even considering that emissions aren't just an abstract environmental concept, they're something that consumers perceive. lot of people don't like diesel because even modern ones have an unpleasant smell to them, a problem which emissions controls have essentially fixed with gas engines

they're also just. not going to stop putting modern emissions equipment in cars. like going to the effort to differentiate the US market cars from the versions sold in Europe etc would probably end up costing them money
