📖 Leader-driven democratic decline 📉

Creating a 'toolkit' of over 400 actions used by would-be autocrats, @jmvanlit.bsky.social & Carolien van Ham make it easier to compare cares, spot patterns and understand when and why #autocratization succeeds

New pre-print!

Is there a need for domain-specificity when studying mental health (MH) and politics? In our study in the Netherlands, we find political mental health (PMH) is distinct from MH & has unique political correlates, from polarization to ideological extremism.

If it helps anyone sleep tonight, we don't find these percentages in our own data across Europe (May-June 2025). Largest shares of 'ambivalents' are found in Poland (30%) and Spain (34%), but overall a majority supports democracy while rejecting autocracy.

Excited to head to Thessaloniki ☀️ soon for #ecprgc25 to present our paper on political trust and policy support. Looking forward to engaging discussions and to soak up some of the city's historic charm between sessions. If you're working on a related topic, do get in touch – I'd love to connect!

Not aware of any dataset, but I know that the website for the Dutch parliament shows the total number of days the MP has been active in parliament (anciënniteit). Maybe those countries provide similar statistics?

(1/5) Out now in Acta Politica: Populist parties increasingly target scientists and scientific knowledge. By analyzing 15 annual waves of representative panel data from the Netherlands (2007–2022), I examine to what extent populist parties fuel science skepticism among their supporters.

📢 New publication: we draw on unique data from 16- and 17-year-old Belgian adolescents who were eligible to vote in the 2024 European elections, and show that low trust in order and representative institutions is linked to protest and radical voting. @dieterstiers.bsky.social @annakern.bsky.social
