The trend was already starting last year. Unicorn Overlord outsold both, Squenix and Nintendo with their latest AAA efforts in the same genre. Maybe not true indie, but Vanillaware is also a smaller company backed by Atlus, who does marketing for plenty of mid-sized studios.

Wrong interpretation of data always can happen, which
doesn't change the fact of solid data to go off.

Any analysis, (also my own at that) always should be taken with a fair dose of critical thinking. We can disagree about opinions, everyone just sees parts of the bigger reality.

People just don't like low quality games. As the majority of all pixelart games are low quality games (as the data really clearly shows), it's more this than an aversion to competent pixelart.

But you need the capsule art in many resolutions, that's the technical issue with PA capsules.

I could debunk this and say that the problem is that most pixelart capsules are made by the devs themselves and they aren't artists.
You simply should hire capsule artists if you wanna do well.
There are some tasteful pixelart capsules which had zero impact on game performance.
