Former mental health worker, former bureaucrat, re-emerging weirdo.

Buy a house from me.
At best, it it lets us celebrate the jibes against the Worst of Us.

At worst, the incels and proto-fascists try to hijack it, leaving the other categories unmolested by them.

That’s a win-win.

I have learned a lot from this job, which I will expand on at some point in the future, but since committing to the decision to leave, I can already see a major shift in me, the way I interact with my family, and my overall outlook on my future.

I wish I could have done this sooner, but…

Looking back, I can now see that this started the small pebbles rolling downhill, from not having enough staff hours to do the work. This led to long nights and weekends after hours, growing isolation from my stakeholders & colleagues, and the steady growth of unforced errors.

The past year and change is where things started to decay. This seemed to be a result of us growing (number of families served), without being provided the extra staff needed to maintain the level of quality our program had built up over the last 6 years.

Fast forward to this past fiscal year, where we ended up spending only $2.5 million to help 105 families.

I also now had a part-time person to help manage the case documentation and create the purchase orders we use to procure the help funded by our program.

I should also mention that up until 3 years ago, I was a department of one. So it was tasked to me to get the department in tip-top shape.

When I took the job, seven years ago, the program was run very poorly: $3.2 million spent to help 58 youth and their families. A lot of that was going to fund help that hadn’t been helping the families for some time.

And that is to say nothing of how out of compliance the program was.

The past year has been extremely difficult at work. I run a program that funds service plans that help keep at-risk youth in the family home. It involves colllaboration with four public agencies, my locality’s administration, a state agency, and TONS of vendor-providers.
