(3/3) "All I ever got was an orange." he would say every holiday season. Coincidently, he died Christmas Day 1977 at the age of 88. His daughter Geraldine even jokingly stated that he did so “ruin it for his family"!

(2/3) According to Jeffrey Vance in his audio commentary for the Criterion Collection release of "The Gold Rush" (1925), (in which Thanksgiving and New Year's are observed, but Xmas is ignored) the real reason why Chaplin hated Christmas is because he grew up in poverty during his childhood days.
