Don't look now, but I think we're being followed.

One for all the maritime nerds out there. In this photo (taken on Sunday) we're flying two different signals on the forward halyards.

For 1 point: identify the 4 individual flags
For 2 points: what is the port signal
For 5 points: what is the stbd signal

We're in Harwich for local bylaw purposes.

Since it's very rare to see them out in the wild, here are the buoys at their nighttime display.

Yachts only do this when they are very distressed. If you spot a yacht like this, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, or call them on VHF Ch16 if you're afloat yourself.

Straw Poll.

What would you call this?
A) adjustable spanner
B) pipe wrench
C) stilson grip

Bonus question;
Which option was the Chief Engineer's, which was mine, and which was the cadet's?

Relatedly, if you like #maritimehistory then SUnderland Maritime Heritage is worth a visit if you're in the area. Lovely models and woodworking workshop, along with a history of shipbuilding on the Wear.

I can (and frequently do) wax lyrical about how much I love being at sea, but it's also worth remembering that it's a career that can expose you to some truly awful sights. Often without any warning at all.

My Captain was at a trade fair last week, and now I have a tiny compass and a glasses cleaning cloth... Not quite sure what he's trying to tell me.

Strong evidence of prior dog on train, but alas, no dog on train.

As a navigation officer with a specialisaton in safety of navigation, this cartoon has always appealed deeply. Sadly, I do not know who to credit with it.

I'm supposed to be driving to the Lake District for a course for work tomorrow, but apparently it's bath time.

Catless people in the NE of England!

This gentleman is after a home where he is the only cat. He's 10, chipped, neutered, indoor all his life, and loves laps.

His name is Charlie and he can be found at www.westgateark.org.uk

Okay, so maybe I /am/ missed while at sea.

Played a few rounds of By Stealth and Sea a fortnight ago. Finding the right navy tokens took ages, so I stole someone else's idea of using pill containers to split them per mission with a matrix for those in multiple.

Deeply satisfying.
