I stopped, however, because they started to figure out, "That's not Santa; it's just a guy DRESSED UP as Santa..." and some were starting to make the leap: "Wait a minute, they're *ALL* just guys dressed up as Santa!" and I didn't want to be That Dad! «sorry!»

One year, I dressed up as Santa for Halloween... Kids would ring the doorbell and say "Trick Or Treat" then I'd open the door and say, "Ho Ho Ho!" You should have seen the looks of cognitive dissonance on their faces! 🧑🎄

I grew up in Maryland, which has similar rules, and I decided it was more "impactful" to register as a Republican, then vote Democrat in the general election, versus always voting along party lines... (And I could always vote for a throw-away candidate in the primaries.)

I feel like this was a relic of manual typesetting machines; i.e., a thicker double-quote made it easier to hold a thinner period in place, or some such.
