You are very generous about your knowledge and raising people you have worked with

GUI won because it was more sellable and easier to use for noobs. I went back to the whole HCI literature about CLI when I was researching Voice Interfaces, which I felt was a better grounding for UX in that case. For AI I would actually think we need to consider it a design material for experiences
dadadan.bsky.social
Fun fact, in the early HCI a lot of the work was based on trying to make better CLI (back in the day HCI was mostly run cog psychologists). The GUI really messed up with that. There was even a period of pushing back against the GUI because CLI is much faster for super users...
dadadan.bsky.social
Although, I think you started without UX designers because engineers just get into building when they are excited. They are not gonna stop and wait if they can build and see with their own eyes...

... And not the standard set for web and GUI.
dadadan.bsky.social
It is an analogue issue to writing for cinema vs radio vs video games. Some things may translate but it is not a 1:1 relationship. Funny thing is, IMO UX research could actually inform design and avoid these issues but it needs to come along with new research methods...
dadadan.bsky.social
Okay then yes, absolutely yes. Same issue with Voice Assistants, before and CUI in general, they don't engage with the medium but try to force it into becoming their known media.
dadadan.bsky.social
I have been pondering your question, but I feel I need to ask, what are you considering "traditional" UX? I feel that regarding AI and Agents we fell into a place of assuming that designing the user experience was unnecessary, since we can all talk and we have been patching from that point on...

I have officially received an exchange for a book (The Games That Weren't) that I have infinitely more faith in, and cannot stress enough, none of this is bitmap book's fault. The other products I've gotten from them are absolutely stellar, and I'm still confident their physical product of (pt1)

Okay video game podbook is the new conceptual category I didn't know I need it to explain our current times
takamomchi.bsky.social
fine I'm stepping on the rake

oh of COURSE you're excited to bring up Card. Like I don't even regret reading his shit despite, uh, look at me, but like WHY HERE. WHY NOW. THIS IS A VIDEOGAME PODBOOK
There’s a question that I’ve been asked
many times: is this the worst Super
Nintendo role-playing game? Worst ...
that’s strong terminology. I can only
say at this point that I don’t like half of
it half as well as I should like, and I like less
than half of it just as much as it deserves.
You’ll have to untangle that one yourself. inspire us, speaking
anecdotally. Would
we have had the fantasy
fiction of C.S. Lewis were it not
for his friendship with Tolkien? Would
we have seen the rise of Le Guin, R.R.
Martin, Pratchett, Del Rey, Brooks, Card
or Stephen King? What about Warcraft,
Warhammer, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy
or Soulsborne? Would there be a D&D to
serve as the inspiration for so many RPGs
without Tolkien? Of course, you don’t
need me to tell you this.

If you are trying to make a point about the whole FF and how its themes and design are in a specific continuum you could make the claim without excluding other takes, it may be true within your claim. But it is there to be an argument not a fact. The whole thing, needing to make this point is weird.
dadadan.bsky.social
I just want to add that the missing question in this whole Is-It-Is-It-Not drama is why? What are we trying to do by making the claim of it being a FF? What's the point beyond trying to sound "clever and contrarian"?

And no matter what, Chrono Trigger is not a Final Fantasy and that argumentation is the most cringe text I've seen in a while. What a mess.

As always it was the cover up that made everything worse, the community manager made a very bad call. This leaves nobody happy but I think, and that is sad. I like their books, I hope they can do better.
dadadan.bsky.social
This has been an impossible situation for Bitmap Books, I hope they do learn from the situation and be more careful about researching their authors. The issue with Moses goes beyond what St1ka showed, and Twitter is filled with very angry racists.

... While this would never replicate the experience (that wasn't my intention) I found out that students could experience the film more deeply through my critique. The film kinda kept playing in their mind and their experience changed. I believe that's our value as lecturers.
