Heading to Lisbon for MIL conference (talking on Thu) - downloaded all of Kate Bush for the flight, thought it might be good for night clouds

For the new issue of The Wire magazine I reviewed two excellent new books: "Why Sound Matters" by Damon Krukowski (@dadadrummer.bsky.social) and the memoir by former Gentle Giant frontman Derek Shulman. Subscribe: @thewiremagazine.bsky.social

Boston doesn’t even make the list of top ten US tour stops any longer - I blame consolidation and the loss of our independent venues to Live Nation and AEG - sure they bring big artists to their big venues, but they have gutted our regular gig-going audience and made this a second tier music market

I hear the first review of my new book is included…

Spotify and ChatGPT make a deal for “integration” and Universal Music Group praises it - what could possibly go wrong for recording artists?

THE DREAM.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

UMAW’s own @joeyquits.bsky.social has a new piece in @jacobinmagazin.bsky.social about the grassroots Maine Music Alliance campaign to stop Live Nation in Portland, ME 💪
dadadrummer.bsky.social
There is a generic quality to this album that goes beyond formulaic. Reviews are all focused on the lyrics - but I’m talking about the production. It sucks. Not cause it’s “bad”. Cause it’s blank
dadadrummer.bsky.social
I take that back - even if Max Martin and Shellback insist there was no AI involved, I will still not believe them
dadadrummer.bsky.social
I have a very specific hunch that Max Martin and Shellback used AI to help make the new TS album and I will cling to this hunch till proven otherwise
dadadrummer.bsky.social
Wait. Do you mean bad reviews didn’t dictate low streaming numbers…? Are you telling me streaming is unconnected to the ongoing conversation about music, in which we look at ourselves and our society through the medium of song? Are you telling me THERE IS NO MEANING TO ANYTHING

Who wants to shop for Fado records with me in Lisbon this week? I’ll be speaking at MIL

Live Nation–Ticketmaster controls nearly every corner of the US live music business, from ticketing to touring.

In Portland, Maine, a coalition of venues, musicians, and art workers rallied the city against the industry’s most powerful monopoly.

We’ve ended up with goddam fascism. Isn’t that enough to sour you on stadium shows and capital consolidation? It’s not the content (enjoy the songs if you do). It’s the scale

“Spotify won’t prohibit this music—not because it thinks it’s innovative or ushering in a new era of technological futurism (the platform has never cared about culture) but simply because it’s generating streams.”
