You could adopt or foster one of the many children in the US who need that. A childless person of grandparent age adopting a child is common enough in works of fiction like Annie, Anne of Green Gables and Punky Brewster.

They are collecting them. I suppose collecting guns is no better or worse than collecting stamps or coins or anything else.
And these people likely do have some guns that they use or would use for the purposes you cite, just as the philatelists also have stamps to mail letters.
