Also if anyone has any advice on how to make oil drips that look believable I would love to hear it! I cant seem to get it shining right 😭

I was debating going back to bare metal again so I focused on getting the paint looking grimey and reducing the soft bumpy height mask.

I think I want to do a highpass version of the paint chips height mask so I can get some thinner peeling on the edges 🤔

Trying out a layer of paint on top. Needs more height variation and way more chipping I think but I feel like it breaks up masses of metals quite well? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Also this game has no right to look this damn good in current year 😍♥️ I cannot believe this game is almost 10 years old..

I think I'm winning a little? 😅

Some of the ref has a painted finish and some are bare metal so I think I might do some paint just to add some more interesting details

Trying to make believable old cast wrought iron has been a challenge so far but heres my first pass at it!

I think its to noisy height wise 🤔

(Please Ignore the manky normals on the wheel its a layer I was meant to delete before exporting but I was running late for work 😅)

Its that wonderful #PortfolioDay time again!

I'm Tom, a Prop/Environment artist looking for there first full-time role in industry!
January 13, 2026 at 2:19 PM
that brings me to now!

I guess TL:DR is your skill set doesnt just jump up it slowly builds over years and it kinda takes a village to make a good artist 😅 without the peeps I mentioned and soo many more spending there time on me I would still be making boxy AKs 😂

I then did a mentoring with Lewis Thompson and created my bladerunner military radio!
January 12, 2026 at 7:34 PM
Then @marknormington.bsky.social and @jordanmossy.bsky.social were kind enough to guide me on creating this impact wrench prop and I also created this construction lamp around the same time
January 12, 2026 at 7:18 PM
I then decided I had to lock in and pick between realism or stylised and at the time I felt my realism was a little further along so I picked that!

I made this crysknife that tbh I regret taking off my portfolio cause I actually really like it (maybe ill update it soon)
January 12, 2026 at 7:14 PM
I then joined the Timesplitters team which took up a lot of my time for a few years but after that did a group stylised art mentorship with @anyatheartist.bsky.social as I had never tried stylised stuff before!
January 12, 2026 at 7:11 PM
I then started another mentorship with Ryan and made my original speakeasy!

Fun fact on this project I was about a month in and it wasnt close to what we wanted so we decided to scrap almost all of it and start over, this was a mega important lesson for me!
January 12, 2026 at 7:10 PM
I then stumbled around for about 6 months with a bunch of props/environments that didnt work out (but still important for learning!)
January 12, 2026 at 7:10 PM
3-4 months after the Jam I did my first mentorship with @blvdnights.bsky.social and he really helped me get on my feet with environment art! ♥️
January 12, 2026 at 7:09 PM
These were followed by my first environment. Which I made as part of a artstation challege (god I miss them 😭😅)

Found renders of the first models I ever did in substance back in 2017

Was going to do the trend of me "20XX - me 20XX" but I feel like that trend doesnt get the point across that #gameart is a compounding skill and it takes a lot of projects to snowball. So heres a 🧵 of mine

Recent realised #Titanfall2 servers arent being ddos anymore so I have been playing again and my lord this game is good

Every movement and action feels so deliberate and solid

And art direction wise the world they built from the architecture to the character designs is so strong and fleshed out 😍

Texturing progress!

I will die on the hill that games are at their greatest when they are treated as a medium for expression and not just entertainment

I dont think there is a better medium for surrealism than games, no other art form can flesh out worlds/ecosystems so smoothly
(I have many screenshots but spoilers)

Finally got the chance to play Keeper and Im so glad I played it!

After 9 years of trying to land an art role my hopes were at there lowest in 2025

I really wanna thank @leepetty.bsky.social and the @doublefine.com team for reminding me why Im bothering to try and enter this stinky industry ♥️

Wireframes so far!

My lowpoly is baked! I will be adding some more sculpted details to the metal parts of the highpoly before I start texturing but Im just happy to have the uvs out the way 😴

Makes sense it shows!

When working on TimesplittersRewind I offered to tackle the front of Spaceways (basically a space airport) I was really struggling to make a start as I hadn't done any sci-fi stuff before and then I watched Lightyear for the first time and it really helped me find my feet!
