Sometimes linguistic papers do go viral & end up getting a double page in another country’s oldest newspaper @berlingske.bsky.social - had a fabulous time in Copenhagen talking to a group of language enthusiasts about physiological reactions to “errors”. Thanks to Jane Hansen from sprogseminar.dk

We introduce process-based measures (i.e. fluency) of automaticity by developing a written version of the elicited imitation task that draws on keystroke logging.

New paper out 🎺 introducing process-based measures of automatisation in L2

The elicited imitation task is widely used as a measure of automatized L2 knowledge. However, the scoring of the task relies exclusively on product-based measures (i.e., accuracy of L2 production).

Sad read, but fully in line with my recent experience, as applicant & as panel member:

1. Reviews vary wildly
2. Panels are inconsistent, essentially a lottery
3. High risk/high gain proposals are systematically sidelined
4. The cost is immense, we need a better way

Hey, UK! Happy first National Linguistics Day!

Proposals for NLD traditions:

(a) Add language wonder to every conversation.

(b) Exchange gifts of linguistics content.

(c) Sing linguistics carols:

(d) Do deeds to protect languages or linguistic institutions.
