It's a bit below UK's stature 😉 but if they want to join the EU, they should bite the bullet and ask for a Stabilisation and Association Agreement. It's far less mercantile and much more comprehensive, covering all aspects of life relevant to future EU member.

What those stairs are missing is Western Balkans and Stabilisation and Association Agreement. Much more ambitious and far less mercantile form of agreement between the EU and potential new members. If UK wants to join, it should aim at SAA not CU.

Do you think something like SSA would be a way to go for the UK? Western Balkan is not the best example but given the mess in UK politics, SSA-like agreement could be the way to gradually rebuild trust and relations over several election cycles.

I know it's below UK's stature to model its policies after the Balkans... But I wonder why nobody in the UK never mentions Stabilisation and Association Agreement, which puts "all" (not just trade) relations with the EU in one agreement? It is also a road map for future membership. Theoretically.

Whether by accident or design, the EU is making Britain decide whether it is truly, deeply, viscerally an 'all-in' European state, and not some half-arsed "let's-try-and-get-what-we-can-out-of-it" state.
It's going to be a long old road.

You know what? I really don't think it is. Great domestic political posturing, but Labour have no plans to go beyond the 'reset' agenda, certainly none the EU are likely to accept. This will be talk to little if any action.
