As a diaspora organization, we celebrate migrant contributions to global development and inclusive growth. And that’s why we contributed to the creation of a cross-border community of 400+ experts with migration backgrounds, forming the ‘MigraVoice Superpower Community’!

✊🏽 International Migrants Day should serve as a reminder that migrants contribute to the social, economic and cultural fabric of communities worldwide.
We call for:
-Better policies
-Stronger cooperation
-A renewed commitment to making migration work for all🕊️

Tragically, this past year the UN recorded the highest-ever death toll of migrants in transit, and significant levels of internal displacement. For this reason, we emphasize the importance of upholding the rights and dignity of all migrants and refugees.

🌍 In 2000, the UN General Assembly established this International Day, considering the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. Migration is a global phenomenon driven by many different forces, yet the common denominators are aspirations for dignity, safety and peace.

✊At Diaspora for Human Rights and Democracy, we remain committed to advancing these fundamental freedoms.

🔇Yet these rights continue to face serious challenges. Across India, civil society groups, journalists and activists face restrictions on free expression and assembly,religious freedom, and are exposed to prolonged or arbitrary detention.

❗️Articles 9, 18, 19, and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirm:

👉 Freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention

👉 Freedom of thought, conscience, and religion

👉 Freedom of opinion and expression

👉 Freedom of peaceful assembly and association

Far-right movements are gaining strength. Digital platforms are accelerating polarisation. Civic space is shrinking.

On Human Rights Day, we're examining these threats- and what can be done.

❗As WHO’s Dr Tedros said: “No society can call itself fair, safe or healthy while half its population lives in fear.” Awareness alone is not enough: we need stronger laws and real prevention programmes.
Only through sustained action can we build societies where women and girls truly thrive.

In India, in 2023 alone, over one-fifth of Indian women faced partner violence, and nearly 30% have faced it at some point in their lives. 🔔Our submission to CEDAW shows India is falling short of its obligations. Marginalised women-especially from minority communities-face systemic gendered harms.

❗Nearly 1 in 3 women globally, around 840 million people, have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. Risks are even higher in least-developed, conflict-affected, and climate-vulnerable regions.
