I think my favorite thing about this account is learning new words while researching creatures! I had no idea hyperkalemia was even a thing until today!

Bonus facts! The Irukandji box jelly #fish is in the same genus! These tiny little "friends" are known for a sting that inflicts incomprehensibly painful symptoms, and psychological symptoms known as "Irukandji Syndrome."

they scare me

Today's aquatic friend is: Chironex fleckeri, the Australian Box Jellyfish! One of the world's most venomous animals, Box Jelly #fish tentacles can grow to ~8' in length. Their nematocysts [stinging cells] carry a venom that can inflict Hyperkalemia, a fatal overabundancd of potassium, if untreated!

They are also the 5th biggest member of their genus, Caranx. They are typically solitary after sexual maturity, though they do school together for mating and, on rare occasions, to feed. In aquaria, they tend to school together. Why they do this is unknown.

Today's Aquatic Friend is: Caranx ignobilis, the Giant Trevally! Trevallies can grow up to 67" and weigh upwards of 180lbs, making them great game #fish! When over 50cm in length, males can be dark in coloration, almost jet black, while females are much lighter, almost silver in color.

so sorry for the inconsistent uploads! Had a lot going on in my personal life. Given a very good life event that may be happening this week, I may end up switching away from the Daily Fish posts. My overall availability will be less, but I'll still be active! :D
