Dick White of @dailyhaikai.bsky.social and @forgottenpoets.bsky.social inspired and co-wrote a little renga with me me over the weekend.
I learned from him, and had so much fun!
The first haikai is by Taimu (d. 1774?), tr. Dick Whyte himself.

Nice one Dave. Though I think perhaps you mean hototogisu (cuckoo), rather than hotogisu?

Love the end of this being a new journey - seems fitting some how. No need for either/or, it's a both/and! 😌

Aw, a lovely image! Reminds me of one of my old #haiku:
reading Bashō
the scent of grass . . .
freshly cut
Which was partly inspired by one of Bonchō's:
morning cool—
freshly cut grass piled
by the gate
🖤

Bashō: “If there are 3 or 4 extra kana, or even 5 or 7, there's no need to worry, as long as it sounds right. But if even one kana is stale in your mouth, give it all of your attention.” 🖤

Night! I'm about to go to bed here - will reply in the morning as well, if you want to keep it going. :-)

Though 5-5 does seem to be working for you in this instance, if you wanna just stick with that!

Ok here's my reply:
noon smells of diesel
thunder far away
dead flowers
next to fake flowers:
spring night
Feel free to reply in any kind of couplet, up to 7-7, but long-long of any count works for me (you'll notice mine follow a short-long-short pattern but not a 5-7-5).

I think here the images have enough distance between them to really start to suggest a mood between them - a third thing, that neither poem states, but both participate in. And there's no repetition of major images :-) Lovely work Kris! Love this one so much.

Personally, I use SLS + LL rather than 575+77, as it can better approximate the fleetness of the images. A Japanese 77 is more like an English 55 anyhow, length-wise, and I love your first reply;
wrapped
around the blackbird,
old sky
noon smells of diesel
thunder far away
This to me is perfect!

In mine, for instance, I imagined the poet sitting on the porch in yours, watching the pale moonset, something slow - and then seeing a blackbird flying by - so same vantage point, but entirely different scene and topic :-)
