Universal Truth I hope you wear it like armor Or wrap it around you as a blanket To keep out the cold when it tries to steal The warmth from your hearth Or the warmth from your heart I hope it settles the trembling Of earthquakes that threaten The uncertain ground Just enough for you to stand I hope you know its light That it flickers like a pulse And guides you back When you've lost yourself I hope you take it for A universal truth, a law of nature Like thermodynamics or gravity Or cats landing on their feet That you are never -- Not even for a breath or a beat or a blink -- Loved any less than wholly By every atom of my being In the expansion of my universe, The supernova that was the moment we met The star it birthed might burn itself out When the cosmos goes dark But until then, and probably after, In echoes and in afterglow, I hope it shines for you.

Twinkle Twinkle In the sky The stars have kept me company And they abide Casting colder rays of sunlight Refracted through the night Like a diamond Precious and priceless Like you So bright but so far from reach Up above the world so high But you are more than Constellations What you are Is the answer to every question I whispered to the midnight sky In the quiet night, searching For meteors showering Light across the darkness How I wonder If you heard me Calling sighing wishing On each and every Little star I tell them I love you Want you need you Cannot hope to have you But all they do In their sparkling silence is Twinkle twinkle

Drowning All the things I tuck unseen In the hidden space between The lines I write to you Could only end, never start To deserve or win your heart No matter what I do. I hide it in the quiet dark Keep the secret, hide the mark Left on my soul by you. My lungs, darling, how they burn I hold my breath, and I yearn, But this is nothing new. Better that you never know, Drown it in the undertow That drags me to the blue Depthless endless storming sea. This will be the end of me But what else can I do? I hide my truth, hold it in, No penance, my single sin: I am in love with you.

Main Ingredients I scramble desperately Through the last few scraps At the back of the cabinets Certain there must be something Still left in my cupboard, Some scrap of joy? Or are we all out? I'd gladly take contentment. You can substitute it in the recipe If you don't mind being creative. Or fleeting happiness, even, Any of that left? A taste? A tablespoon? A crumb? Well. I'll add them to the shopping list If they ever come off back order. For now all I'm finding, At the back The hardest spot to reach Is all that Pandora had left When she slammed the lid On the box she's always blamed for opening. (Who put the rest of that nonsense In an unlocked box anyway? Without a warning label?) But anyway. I guess I need to find out now: What can we make with hope?

Gardens and Graves We tend our hopeful gardens, Vicious to the weeds that spoil All our fertile, flourished soil Share what we can of all our seeds Over fences we did not wish to build Because we know, ground turned, ground tilled For all varied vast geography Earth is earth and we will stay Crafted all of the same clay And working our plots as best we can Brace against the storm and swell And those who'd wreak and rain down hell On all our flowering hopes Our silver bells And cockle shells We pretty maids all in a row Shoulder to shoulder, hand to spade, Till and turn, reap and sow Mark the seasons as they go We hold the line, we do the work. We write we scream we rage we cry And wait for cruel old men to die To bury them beneath the roots Of perennials we've planned and set To never forgive, never forget And thrive upon their graves.
