When trying to get our preschool licensed, we had a very tight timeline. Our consultants came out on a Sunday for the final approval. I asked them, once approved, if I could buy them some coffee for their time and help. They said no, it was illegal to accept gifts.

In the late 80s I worked for a test equipment company. When we held seminars promoting our equipment we had to put out a container that allowed government employees to pay for the coffee we supplied.

My dad was a Marine who once (1950s) was part of a ceremonial guard for the king of Saudi Arabia. At the end of the visit, each Marine was given a gold watch and a $100 bill by the king. A State Department representative confiscated the watches and an IRS agent handed each Marine a tax form. 😄

The refusal of the Trump administration to follow the law is not a reason to give up on passing laws. It is a reason for Congress to keep doing (that is, *start* doing) its job of oversight and passing more laws in response.
