Exactly. It’s understanding the difference between grades reflecting “best effort” versus “performance during a horrible time that is likely not indicative of what they can do”. A lot of leeway is given to what is obviously “disaster semester” and not consistently middling grades w/ the same GPA.

This would be punishing to inclusive collaborations, if you rolled it out without warning. If you put your grad student on a proposal they made a plot for, they then couldn’t lead their own work as a postdoc. Doesn’t seem right.
