Anyway, I'm actually not really opposed to governing cars at a reasonable speed, but a "reasonable speed" might include allowing you to drive 5-10 over for short periods to facilitate normal passing.

I also hate driving right behind somebody who is weaving all over their lane, and I usually pass them. I want that person behind me. If I have to slow down to put distance between us, that seems like it would stifle the flow of traffic quite a bit.

I am skeptical but mainly for this reason: If the only way to create space between you and the car in front of you is to slow down, would that cause gridlock? I genuinely don't know, but it sounds plausible. Any traffic engineers on here?

I had to try several online versions before I found one that didn't "correct" that spelling!

I'm curious if my reading is closer to Kevin or Rick: He's saying that racists HEAR racist shit in their rhetoric, but he denies the racism is REALLY there. But in his denial, he finds an excuse to say the N word a bunch of times, and it comes off like he's winking to the camera.

Also, this chapter that is essentially a metaphysical prose poem about whale dicks.

Eric Foner, in Second Founding (2019), notes that the only exclusions discussed in the congressional debates on the 14th Amendment citizenship language were newborns in independent Indian nations and those of foreign diplomats, exactly consistent with the traditional understanding of the Amendment

This is not who I had thought he was, and I'm confused because was I wrong or was Dennis Green wrong?

He is sovereign, but he is just.

Is this some kind of subtle-nod-endorsement of Acton?
December 12, 2025 at 5:14 PM
Well dang. I think it would be pretty reasonable to apply the fine to the cost of the device!
December 12, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Yeah, it probably would reduce total drinking and that really would offset the cost at least a bit. You could also make an argument for subsidizing these for lower income earners, since reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road is of great value to the general public.

I like the extension idea.

Do you know if the price of the interlock is included in other fines? Like, if you are fined say $1,000 for the DUI, can that fine go toward the cost of the interlock? Seems like it should. ($1,000 is a made up number; I don't know what's typical.)

FWIW, I'm definitely not arguing that people making minimum wage have it worse than the Victorian poor!

So where would you house your family if 6 if you made $7.25/hr?
December 11, 2025 at 4:34 PM
Where in the U.S. are you going to rent even something that bad for like $125/month, though?
December 11, 2025 at 4:08 PM
I'm sure real median income is much higher now, but I doubt $7.25/hr is much better than the Cratchit's 15 shillings/wk. E.g., there's no place in the U.S. where you can find anything like the Cratchit's 4-room home for anything like 10% of $7.25/hr.
