It's that time of year when many start thinking about applying for PhDs. If you're applying for a UK PhD position, here is a blog post I wrote a while back that might be helpful

How to get PhD funding in the UK

Excited to see Swift enter her academic era: "Actually Romantic" is about peer review. Chorus:

"But it's actually sweet
All the time you've spent on me
It's honestly wild
All the effort you've put in
It's actually scholarship
I really got to hand it to you
No man has ever reviewed like you do"

Happy new Taylor Swift album day, for those who celebrate! (Which now includes the postgraduates who work in the offices opposite mine.)

It feels like we’re going back to one-to-one chats and smaller groups. Like MSN back in the day, but through Snapchat or Fortnite (or whatever newer thing I’m unfamiliar with). Or Signal and the like for us olds, for sharing kids photos or planning military strikes.

Hahaha, because it’s you, I assumed the humblebrag was genuinely completely unintentional. That’s what makes it funny ;)

Term has started here, so I'm once again inundated with emails addressed "Sir" (used in UK secondary schools), "Mr" (same), and "heyyyyy" (??). Seems this brief blog for new students is still relevant: www.dalmaijer.org/2022/03/how-...

Feel free to use, if you find yourself in the same position!

Hahaha! I don't know, mate, I'd love to see "cheesy thing" enshrined in international law... 🤔

That said, given the mainstream vegan naming conventions, I think "burgyr" is a more likely (and much less desirable) alternative.
dalmaijer.bsky.social
Agree that this is nuts*, but "cheesy thing" was exactly how we described a class of veggie burger alternatives in our household ;) Also, just to clarify: the UK left because we like our bananas curved and our crisps prawn-flavoured.

* Has the peanut lobby managed to outlaw this use yet?

All-around clever stats person @bignardi.bsky.social has come up with a clever way to estimate reliability for many measurement models. Informative thread; worth a read!

Such a lovely talk, and I’m glad our admin upgraded the venue as there was standing room only! I particularly enjoyed Aidan’s perspective on hippocampal and non-hippocampal encoding as independent processes, and flexibility of memories within that space. (I also enjoyed the brief Mario Kart break.)

Really enjoying this new focussed work feature in Microsoft's enterprise software suite!

Logging into Outlook sends you into a login loop: you log in, it automatically logs you out immediately, you log in again, etc. Keep going to hit a rate limit, and then you're locked out of email distractions!

My favourite Dutch analogy is “straks”. In the ~hands~ mouths of my southern family, it could mean “in a few moments” (“straks”), later today (“straks”), later this week (“straks”), and in the recent past (“toen-straks”).

Come see Aidan's talk on the remembering and forgetting of complex episodic events! There's something for everyone: retrieval, forgetting, behaviour, neuroimaging, computational modelling, young and aging samples.

We had to upgrade the venue because of how popular @aidanhorner.bsky.social is here!

Oh, wow, climate change is really messing up the seasons. Looks like it’s April 1st already! This one wins for me: “Oxford does advertisement for shitty product on main” is a great joke.
